About This Position
Located in Gretna, Nebraska, Vala’s is a family owned and operated fall festival open to the public 45 to 55 days a year and is a treasured fall tradition for many families in the surrounding communities. Vala’s property spans 400+ acres, including over 50 attractions, such as pick-your-own pumpkins, apples, and flowers, and over 25 food locations.
The Security Specialist I is a professional position responsible for safeguarding our attractions, food locations, retail assets and more from theft, vandalism, and unauthorized entry when closed to the public. Reporting to the Director of Safety & Attractions, the Security Specialist I will take an active role in maintaining a safe and secure environment, ensuring the farm is safe and ready for employees and guests. This is a full time, 30 hour, hourly position. This role will include overnight hours, as well as weekends and holidays. Working days/hours: 6:00 P.M. to 4:00 A.M. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Responsibilities:
Surveillance & Patrol
- Conduct regular foot or vehicle patrols of the 400+ acre property, including the pumpkin patch, apple orchards, and restricted areas.
- Ensure all 50+ attractions, gates, fences, and buildings are properly locked and secured against intrusion.
- Monitor high-value areas, including specialty locations and merchandise shops, to prevent pilferage or property damage.
- Continuously observe camera feeds and alarm systems from a central station or mobile device.
Emergency Response & Safety
- Act as the first responder to onsite emergencies, including fire hazards, medical incidents, or security breaches.
- Contact and guide local law enforcement or emergency services to the farm if a situation escalates.
- Identify and report potential safety hazards such as plumbing leaks, electrical issues, or structural damage that could affect the next day's operations.
Administrative & Operational Support
- Maintain a detailed daily shift log documenting all patrols, observations, and any unusual activities.
- Complete accurate and professional incident reports for any thefts, accidents, or confrontations.
- Manage late-night or early-morning entry for authorized staff, contractors, or delivery drivers, verifying credentials as needed.
- Assist in safety-related tasks, as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior security, law enforcement, or military experience is preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background check.
- Ability to remain alert and focused for the duration of an overnight shift.
- Maintain clear verbal and written communication.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to use various forms of technology (laptop, tablet, cellphone).
- Flexibility to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong problem solving skills, with the ability to make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
