JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Engineer provides technical and administrative support to the City’s Engineering Department. This position assists with development review, infrastructure projects, construction coordination, record keeping, and public inquiries related to engineering, utilities, drainage, and right-of-way matters to help ensure projects comply with City standards and regulations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach above and below should level, stoop, crouch, kneel, and climb. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions (office environment) and regularly works near video display/computer use. In addition, the employee is regularly works in an outdoor field environment, which may include extreme heat and cold, outdoor weather conditions. This position is required to occasionally work in close proximity to moving machinery/equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud. Attendance at meetings, including occasional evenings, may be required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with review of construction plans, site plans, and development submittals for compliance with City standards, specifications, and approved plans.
- Supports capital improvement and infrastructure projects, including roads, drainage, utilities, and coastal or stormwater systems.
- Helps coordinate with contractors, engineers, developers, and other City departments during project design and construction.
- Conducts field visits and inspections to observe construction progress and document site conditions.
- Assists with tracking permits, project files, as-built drawings, and engineering records.
- Responds to public inquiries regarding drainage, right-of-way, utilities, and infrastructure concerns.
- Assists in preparing reports, correspondence, maps, and project documentation.
- Supports stormwater and floodplain-related activities as assigned.
- Maintains databases, spreadsheets, and asset management information.
- Attends meetings with staff, consultants, and the public as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles related to roads, drainage, utilities, and site development.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and technical documents.
- Familiarity with surveying, inspections, and construction practices.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and AutoCAD Civil 3D software. Proficiency hydrology and GIS software preferred.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, engineers, staff, and the public.
- Ability to perform fieldwork in varying weather and site conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited university.
- Certification as an Engineering Intern with the Alabama Board for Engineers and Land Surveyors within four (4) months of the date of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- One (1) to three (3) years of experience in engineering, construction, public works, or related field preferred.
