About This Position

Description:

The mission of Milestone Recovery is to provide compassionate care and services to empower individuals experiencing substance use disorders, mental illnesses and homelessness to attain an enhanced quality of life regardless of ability to pay.

Position Summary:

The Senior Accountant supports the financial health of a nonprofit behavioral health organization, with special emphasis on grant management, compliance, and financial reporting. This role ensures accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial processes, and plays a key role in managing grant funds, supporting audits, and providing actionable analysis to leadership.

Onsite Position: Though we have flexibility to offer some remote work, this role is primarily an onsite position at our India St. Portland, ME office.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and perform complex accounting functions, including managing general ledger, financial statements, and at the direction of the Controller, lead a month end.
  • Assist Controller with grant management activities, including allocation of expenses, compliance tracking, and preparation of grant-specific reports for funders and auditors.
  • Ensure proper documentation, accurate coding, and segregation of grant and restricted funds in accordance with nonprofit and healthcare regulations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including funder-specific reporting as required.
  • Analyze financial data and trends related to grant funding, program costs, and cash management to advise operational leaders.
  • Support budget development and financial forecasting for grant-funded behavioral health programs.
  • Collaborate with program and clinical leaders to monitor grant spending and ensure compliance with terms and timelines.
  • Coordinate audit preparation and assist with ongoing audit processes, providing required documentation for grant and financial transactions.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting processes, including internal controls and grant accounting procedures.
  • Utilize accounting software (such as QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud, or sector-specific solutions) for efficient and accurate reporting.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in healthcare and behavioral health.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in grant accounting, fund reporting, and compliance.
  • Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Strong familiarity with nonprofit fund accounting standards, grant requirements, and internal controls.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and relevant accounting software.
  • Commitment to mission-driven work and ethical financial practices.

This position is full benefits-eligible starting first of the month following start date.
