The City of Auburn's Public Works Department is seeking a Storm Drainage Technician. This position performs office and field work related to stormwater and water quality management in compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit (NPDES permit) issued by the Washington State Department of Ecology. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, inspections, investigations, program coordination and compliance on public and private properties, interagency coordination, and water quality monitoring and analyses of storm drainage runoff and receiving waters.


WHAT TO EXPECT:
This position will be involved in a variety of meaningful and forward looking stormwater projects that directly support the City’s environmental stewardship and infrastructure planning efforts. The successful candidate will help implement and track initiatives identified in the City’s Comprehensive Storm Drainage Plan, which guides long-term stormwater system improvements, maintenance strategies, and regulatory compliance efforts. This position will also support Stormwater Management Action Plan (SMAP) implementation, focusing on targeted pollution reduction strategies that improve water quality in local receiving waters. Additionally, the position will contribute to maintaining and improving storm drainage system mapping and asset management data to support capital planning and operational decision-making.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of stormwater and water quality, including NPDES Phase II permit requirements. The candidate should be skilled in performing inspections, investigating illicit discharges, and ensuring regulatory compliance, with experience in water quality sampling, GIS mapping, and asset tracking systems. Strong communication, collaboration, and the ability to work independently while handling multiple priorities are also essential to support the City’s stormwater program.

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT:
Our Public Works Department is a great place to work because it is a collaborative, service-focused team committed to building and maintaining safe, reliable infrastructure for the community, and as part of the Storm Drainage Utility within Public Works, we contribute directly to protecting water quality and environmental health under the Phase II permit administered by the Washington State Department of Ecology.
In this role you will:
  • Perform annual inspections of storm drainage facilities on private and public property for compliance with local, state, and federal water quality/quantity regulations. Identifies, records, and reports all defects/deficiencies and maintenance necessary to bring sites into compliance with the City’s codes, standards, and state requirements.

  • Investigate complaints and reports of stormwater violations such as illicit discharges, spills, and water quality concerns, and recommends an appropriate course of action for correction.

  • Maintain knowledge of, and stays current with, existing and proposed local, state and federal stormwater regulations (NPDES permit), stormwater treatment techniques, environmental issues, and an understanding of the City’s storm drainage system.

  • Two years college level course work in environmental science, engineering, or a related field;

AND

  • One (1) year of relevant, applicable experience that demonstrates the ability to complete the essential responsibilities listed above

  • any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual’s knowledge, skill, and ability to successfully perform the primary functions described above.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Possess and retain a valid Washington State Driver’s License without impending loss at time of appointment.
