Job Description

JOB TITLE: Mental Health Clinician

FLSA: Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Homeless Services

REPORTS TO: Director, Homeless Services

LOCATION: Mount Vernon, NY

SALARY: $75, 000-$85,000.00 Annual

Summary:

The Mental Health Clinician provides trauma-informed clinical services to adults and families residing in a Tier II family shelter. The clinician supports residents in addressing mental health needs, stabilizing crises, and overcoming barriers to permanent housing. This role integrates therapeutic intervention with case management and works collaboratively with shelter staff and community providers to promote family stability, wellness, and self-sufficiency.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and mental health screenings for shelter residents
  • Develop and implement individualized service and treatment plans in coordination with case management staff to ensure clients are connected to appropriate services
  • Provide individual, family, and group counseling using evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches
  • Deliver crisis intervention, de-escalation, and risk assessments, including suicide risk and safety planning
  • Support clients with co-occurring disorders, including mental health and substance use conditions
  • Facilitate psychoeducational groups (e.g., parenting, stress management, coping skills, trauma recovery)
  • Collaborate closely with case managers, housing specialists, and shelter staff to coordinate care and support service planning
  • Make referrals and link clients to psychiatric services, outpatient treatment, and community-based resources
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with external providers, schools, and social service agencies
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation in compliance with agency, county, and state (DSS/OTDA) requirements
  • Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences, supervision, and team meetings
  • Support clients in addressing barriers to housing stability related to mental health challenges
  • Ensure services are culturally responsive and aligned with client-centered, trauma-informed, and strengths-based practices
  • Provide consultation to staff regarding clients’ psychosocial needs and the impact of mental health on overall functioning and treatment compliance
  • Utilize computer systems and software applications for documentation, data management, and service tracking
  • Provide crisis intervention and stabilization as needed, including occasional after-hours or weekend response to emergencies
  • Identify program needs and recommend improvements to enhance service delivery

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

LCSW with strong a strong background in trauma informed care. Strong assessment, direct practice and counseling skills to provide support and guidance to homeless families residing in a small family shelter. Ability to provide clinical insight and guidance to shelter staff in conjunction with Shelter leadership. Strong Communication skills and ability to engage residents.
