Job Description

POSITION: Associate Director of Student Advising

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Advising and International Programs

STATUS: Full-time, Exempt

RANGE: $110,000

Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Downtown Brooklyn, New York. The Law School is searching for an Associate Director of Student Advising to join our team and play a vital role in providing personalized guidance to our J.D. and LL.M. students related to academic planning, course selection, degree progression, and certificate offerings. The ideal candidate will have experience in legal education, specifically in working on advising; an interest in working in higher education; a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity; and a passion for supporting the Law School’s students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working under the direction of the Director of Student Advising and International Programs to implement Brooklyn Law School’s academic advising plan to all law students.
  • Serving as the primary student-facing advisor for academic advising, maintaining an open calendar for student meetings and counseling sessions.
  • Providing individualized academic advising to a diverse student body, helping students navigate course selection, degree requirements, and academic challenges.
  • Working with the Academic Success department to facilitate Academic Success Plans for students who are under Academic Supervision (1L) or participating in the Scholarship Earn-Back program (2L)
  • Working closely with the Student Affairs team and other stakeholders to address issues related to student well-being, academic concerns, and personal development.
  • Collaborating with faculty, administrators, and student services to continuously improve advising services, policies, and practices.
  • Working with the Director of Bar Preparation to ensure students make course selection choices that maximize bar exam readiness.
  • Engaging with faculty and administrators to identify and address academic challenges affecting students and ensure that students have the necessary resources and support.
  • Supporting the Director of Student Advising and International Programs in the management of the Student Advising and Mentorship Program (SAMP).

Required:

  • A JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Knowledge of NY Court of Appeals requirements to sit for the NY Bar Examination
  • Knowledge of ABA Standards for legal education
  • Excellent judgement, analytical and oral/written communication skills
  • Critical thinking skills, including an ability to solve difficult problems and balance competing interests
  • Effective conflict resolution skills and an ability to maintain neutrality
  • Emotional intelligence and an ability to listen carefully and react with sensitivity and compassion
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex student cases and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • A passion for student success, academic excellence, and promoting diversity and inclusion in legal education.
  • In-depth knowledge of academic advising best practices and legal education curricula.
  • Strong understanding of the unique challenges faced by law students, including academic pressures, professional development, and wellness.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to provide mentorship and guidance to students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Preferred:

  • Experience working in legal education, specifically in an advising context.
  • Familiarity with issues related to student mental health and wellness, and a commitment to supporting students’ well-being.

Remote capabilities:

  • The Associate Director of Student Advising position is a student facing role which requires presence on campus, in person a minimum of four (4) days per week.
  • Remote work may be available one (1) day per week, pursuant to an approved hybrid work agreement, and keeping in mind that the essential functions of role require in person presence on campus.

Travel:

  • Some travel may be required.
