Position SummaryThe Phlebotomy Technician provides direct clinical support to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth by collecting blood specimens, performing point-of-care testing, and ensuring proper specimen handling in accordance with clinical, safety, and infection control standards. The technician will work with a diverse patient population in a fast-paced medical environment.
Duty HoursMonday through Friday
Between 0500 and 1800
Shifts typically 8.5–9 hours, including an uncompensated 30-minute lunch break
Schedules may vary based on operational demand
Graduate of an accredited phlebotomy training program with a minimum of 120 didactic hours (or as required by state law)
Board Certification:
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or
American Medical Technologists (AMT)
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (current)
Minimum 1,040 hours of experience as a Phlebotomy Technician within the preceding 36 months
Clinical rotations completed during training may be counted toward experience hours
Must have successfully performed:
At least 100 venipunctures
At least 10 skin punctures
Provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the last two (2) years, attesting to clinical competency and patient care skills
At least one (1) letter must be from a physician or supervisor who has directly observed and evaluated the candidate
The second letter may be from a clinic or hospital administrator, physician, or nurse familiar with the candidate’s patient care skills
Letters must include:
Name, title, address, phone number, date, and signature
Commentary on communication skills, professionalism, and interpersonal abilities with patients and staff
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Collect blood samples and perform Point of Care Testing (POCT)
Verify patient identity using approved identification protocols
Properly label specimens with patient information and collection dates
Select appropriate blood collection techniques based on patient condition
Transport specimens to designated laboratory sections
Centrifuge blood samples as required
Work with a high volume of patients of varying ages and medical conditions
Maintain strict adherence to Infection Control standards
Follow OSHA regulations and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements
Complete required laboratory, POCT, and equipment training and demonstrate competency prior to task performance
Perform only duties for which documented training and competency have been completed
Provide instruction and training when designated as a Preceptor/Instructor
