Position Summary:
The Medical‑Surgical Nurse Educator is a clinical education leader responsible for advancing nursing practice, strengthening workforce capability, and promoting excellence in patient care across the medical‑surgical service line. This role integrates expertise in adult learning, clinical competency development, evidence‑based practice, and professional growth to ensure nurses are prepared to deliver safe, high‑quality, patient‑centered care in a dynamic environment. The Nurse Educator continuously assesses learning needs; designs, implements, and evaluates comprehensive educational programs; and provides hands‑on clinical support that enhances critical thinking, clinical judgment, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
In partnership with nursing leadership, quality teams, and interdisciplinary colleagues, the Nurse Educator aligns educational initiatives with organizational priorities, regulatory requirements, clinical quality metrics, and evolving practice standards. The role works collaboratively with other specialty nurse educators across the organization to ensure consistency, standardization, and integration of educational strategies, cross‑unit competencies, and shared clinical priorities. This includes active participation in planning, facilitating, and evaluating systemwide general orientation, nurse onboarding, and transition‑to‑practice programs, ensuring that medical‑surgical staff receive a comprehensive and cohesive introduction to the organization and to professional practice.
As a mentor, consultant, and role model, the Medical‑Surgical Nurse Educator fosters a culture of continuous learning, shared governance, professional advancement, and positive team engagement. Through proactive rounding, performance coaching, competency validation, and responsive instructional design, this role contributes directly to improved staff experience, reduced turnover, clinical excellence, and enhanced patient outcomes.
Qualifications:
Education:
Required
- Current South Carolina (or compact state) licensure as RN (SCLLR) in good standing required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required, Or ADN with development plan as agreed upon by CNO..
- Minimum 3–5 years clinical experience in medical‑surgical nursing.
- BLS certification.
- ACLS certification
Preferred
- Master’s degree in Nursing Education, Clinical Leadership, or related field.
- National certification (e.g., CMSRN, MEDSURG‑BC, NPD‑BC).
- Experience in staff development, education, precepting, or leadership.
- Familiarity with simulation, e‑learning systems, and instructional design.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Education & Training
- Develops, implements, and evaluates orientation programs for new nurses, travelers, and unlicensed assistive personnel on medical‑surgical units.
- Conducts ongoing competency assessments, annual skills validations, and targeted training based on performance gaps or regulatory needs.
- Provides hands‑on clinical coaching, preceptor support, and bedside teaching.
- Ensures educational content aligns with evidence‑based practice and organizational standards.
Professional Development
- Creates individualized learning plans for staff growth and certification pathways (e.g., CMSRN, RN‑BC).
- Facilitates continuing education programs, workshops, and simulation‑based training.
- Supports preceptor and charge nurse development programs.
Quality & Regulatory Compliance
- Collaborates with Quality, Infection Prevention, and Patient Safety teams to address clinical issues, trends, and improvement opportunities.
- Uses data (e.g., falls, pressure injuries, CLABSI, CAUTI, readmissions) to design targeted educational interventions.
- Ensures compliance with DNV, CMS, state regulations, and ANA standards of practice.
Clinical Expertise & Consultation
- Serves as the clinical subject‑matter expert for medical‑surgical nursing practice.
- Participates in policy development, evidence‑based practice projects, and protocol reviews.
- Provides real‑time consultation to staff during high‑acuity or complex patient situations.
- Ability to jump in and lend a hand to staff on the floor at busy times.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Works closely with nurse managers, charge nurses, and interdisciplinary partners to meet department goals.
- Supports workforce planning by assessing staffing competencies and identifying training needs.
- Participates in shared governance councils, Pathway to Excellence initiatives, and organizational committees.
