Position Summary:
The Director Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) is responsible for assisting in the organization, preparation, review and management of the annual operating budget. This role will be the lead finance partner for support services/functional and fundraising teams and will partner and interact with Direct Reports and other leaders in the organization to facilitate financial planning and perform a broad range of fiscal, budgetary, and financial analysis. The Director of FP&A will support the Chief Financial Officer and Vice President, Financial Analysis & Business Partnering in the consolidation, review and analysis of operating budgets and forecasts, as well as the monthly consolidation and analysis of total operating results. This role will also assist with incorporating new technologies, systems and processes and support the Vice President, Financial Analysis & Business Partnering with special projects.


The Director FP&A will supervise a team of Finance analysts dedicated to supporting and partnering with support services and fundraising teams across the organization. The ideal candidate has a high degree of financial acumen, strong financial systems skills, extraordinary customer service skills, and is very well-organized. The position reports to the Vice President, Financial Analysis & Business Partnering. Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.


This position is classified as hybrid preferred. Hybrid employees are expected to work in an Audubon office every Monday and Tuesday and an additional two days each month of the employee’s choosing. Remote work within the United States may be considered only for candidates not within commuting distance of an Audubon office, in accordance with Audubon’s “Where We Work” Policy. Compensation:


Salary range based on geo-differentials:


  • $115,000 - $129,000 / year = Albuquerque, NM; Charleston, SC; Columbia, SC; Fargo, ND; Fort Collins, CO; Lincoln, NE; Miami, FL; New Orleans, LA; Salt Lake City, UT; Tallahassee, FL

  • $129,000 - $145,000 / year = Albany, NY; Anchorage, AK; Baltimore, MD; Chicago, IL; Palm Desert, CA; Roseville, MN; Sacramento, CA; Washington, DC

  • $144,000 - $162,000 / year = New York, NY; Oakland, CA


  • Essential Functions:

    Planning & Budget


  • Supervise, manage, mentor and develop a team of financial analysts who each have their own portfolios.

  • Manage the preparation and review of operating budgets, and required reforecasts, for Support Services and Fundraising teams. Partner with Direct Reports and other budget leads in the development of annual budget and forecasts.

  • Answer high priority analytical questions to drive better understanding of business value drivers and identify areas of opportunity.

  • Improve forecasting process by using data-driven analyses to help shape conclusions.

  • Support Vice President, Financial Analysis & Business Partnering in maintaining and enhancing long range financial model. Partner with fundraising teams to understand multi-year revenue forecasts and translation of new raise to operating revenue.

  • Partner with People & Culture and relevant budget stakeholders on job approvals within Workday.

  • Partner and collaborate with Director, Financial Planning and Analysis for Conservation teams in preparation of annual budget guidance, templates and alignment on processes.

  • Support Vice President, Financial Analysis & Business Partnering with the consolidation of annual budget and forecasts within financial systems in preparation for Finance Committee and Board meeting.


  • Reporting & Analysis


  • Prepare monthly variance reports and analyses for Support Services and Fundraising teams. Provide commentary, guidance and clarity to stakeholders to support with overall budget management.

  • Conduct monthly revenue analysis and reporting. Partner with fundraising partners to reconcile new raise and operating revenue variances.

  • Ensure accurate coding of expenditures and timely recognition of revenue. Monitor, review, and analyze budget performance and accounting reports.

  • Research and provide recommendations for complex budget and financial management issues.

  • Assist Vice President, Financial Analysis & Business Partnering with ad-hoc reporting and special projects.

  • Maintain and foster culture of safety.

  • Other job-related duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.

  • At least 10 years of experience in budget management/preparation.

  • Non-profit and management experience in a similar position required.

  • In depth knowledge of financial and budget systems, with a demonstrated ability to create new system-generated reports. Experience in Workday Financials strongly preferred.

  • Experience providing excellent customer service to a wide range of constituents. Must have the ability to interact with a wide range of staff with varying degrees of financial acumen.

  • Experience with creating and maintaining robust multi-year financial model in excel.

  • Strong planning, problem solving, data collection/management, and analytical skills.

  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting is critical to the successful candidate’s ability to maintain Audubon’s proprietary grant tools and analyze the impact of projects, grants and initiatives on Audubon’s operating budget.
