About This Position

The duration of work is expected to start in May and end in November. The typical workweek is M-F and depending on the assignment, the shift will be 7:30 am to 4:00 pm or 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

The District's focus is the surveillance and control of mosquitoes and their associated diseases.

Seasonal Vector Control Technicians provide a layer of support for District activities during times of peak activity. Candidates hired will assist in a variety of functions within the District, working with the Field Operations Department and/or Vector Ecology Department. Directed by field supervisors and report to respective department managers.

A successful candidate will have a passion for learning, enjoy working outdoors and have an interest in public health.

The Position

Under direct supervision of the Field Operations and/or Vector Ecology departments, the Seasonal Vector Control Technician performs inspections, surveillance and control operations of the District including, but not limited to, vector control activities, abatement procedures, surveillance support activities, and field inspections.


Typical duties may include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Conducts abatement of mosquitoes, stinging insects and other vectors.
  • Surveys assigned areas for sources of vectors, e.g. ponds, catch basins, residential premises, and swimming pools; prepares inspection reports and records pesticide usage.
  • Operates District vehicles, powered and hand spray equipment; keeps vehicle and equipment in good working order; performs simple maintenance as directed.
  • Records data on work performed, type of service, chemical use, and vector population history.
  • Identifies mosquitoes/vectors and assists laboratory staff in obtaining adult or larval mosquito samples.
  • Assists in the collection, maintenance, and distribution of mosquito fish.
  • Assists in maintenance of sentinel chicken flock and collection of blood samples.
  • Communicates with homeowners/residents regarding vector control services.
  • Interacts with co-workers at all levels in the District in a collaborative and customer service-oriented manner.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
  • Biology and ecology of vectors (preferred).
  • Basic arithmetic.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to effectively interact with the public and staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

Ability to:
  • Understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Conduct vector surveillance activities and identify issues in assigned areas.
  • Maintain logs, maps and records.
  • Mix, load and apply pesticides according to label specifications and in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Prepare operational reports on work performed.
  • Understand, interpret and apply all laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures relevant to work performed.
  • Operate district vehicles and specialized equipment.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High school graduate or equivalent.
LICENSE(S) REQUIRED
Must be in possession of a valid California driver’s license to be maintained throughout employment. Must be insurable with the District's insurance carrier.
