Description:

The Medical Assistant is a professional multi-skilled person dedicated to assisting in all aspects of medical practice under the direct supervision and responsibility of a physician. This practitioner assists with patient care management and executes administrative and clinical procedures. Competence in the field also requires that a medical assistant adhere to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize and respond to emergencies and demonstrate professional characteristics.

Clinical Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant may undertake the following duties:

• Perform clinical procedures to include

o Aseptic procedures

o Taking vital signs

o Preparing patients for the provider’s care

o Perform venipunctures and non-intravenous injections

o Observing and reporting patient’s signs and/or symptoms

o Administering basic first aid

o Assisting with patient examinations or treatments

o Operating office medical equipment

o Collecting routine laboratory specimens as directed by the provider

o Administering medications as directed by the provider (Exception: medications requiring dosage calculations)

o Performing basic laboratory procedures

o Performing office procedures including all general administrative duties required by the provider

If a licensed provider is not on-site, the medical assistant is prohibited from performing the following:

• Performing injections (medications and/or vaccines)

• Administering medications

• Prohibited from performing activities for which the unlicensed assistive personnel has not demonstrated competence

Additional Position Expectations and Responsibilities

• Act as first level contact for the providers and support staff in trouble shooting issues

• Ensure patients are properly checked in and out for clinical visits via Electronic Medical Record (EMR)

• Schedule follow up appointments for patients per provider’s direction

• Ensure patient documentation is fully completed and recorded via the EMR

• Schedule surgical bookings

• Ensure that external third-party documentation (i.e. labs, reports, consultations) are collected and sent to scan as appropriate

• Answer phones, check and return voicemail messages within 24 hrs.

• Respond to all correspondence and tasks via email, letter, fax and EMR communication within 48 hrs.

• Have knowledge of Universal Precautions and National Patient Safety Goals

• Be proficient in all computer software utilized for patient care

• Participate as a multi-disciplinary team within the scope of practice to provide patient care and other patient needs in a professional, safe and timely manner

• Complete all necessary documentation to include but limited to necessary documentation, lab logs, sample medication logs, refrigerator temp logs, and reports

• Keep Pod clean, restocking rooms as needed and assist with ordering supplies

• Communicate effectively with all members of the patient care team

• Other duties as assigned

Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer knowledge

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year related work experience
  • Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants
  • Registered by the American Medical Technologists
  • Bilingual (English-Spanish or English-Navajo)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk or view a computer screen for extended periods of time
  • Ability to use hands and fingers to handle and feel
  • Ability to reach with hands or arms
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions for extend periods of time
  • Ability to effectively talk and listen to patients

Relationship Reporting

  • Reports Directly to the Clinical Supervisor
