Job Description

Summary

A MLT serves patients by identifying the best method for collecting specimens; accurately ordering and preparing specimens for laboratory testing; performing other laboratory testing procedures as per training. Provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in toxicology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, and microbiology laboratories, receiving, typing, and testing.

In-office presence is an essential function due to the need for real-time collaboration with providers, direct interaction with patients and caregivers, and secure handling of health data in compliance with HIPAA.

Qualification Requirements

Must be proficient in the processing and analysis of specimens according to protocols and in the parameters established. Ensures preparation of specimens for examination. Conducts routine tests within clinical laboratories regarding the practice of treatment and diagnosis. Utilizes precise laboratory equipment according to safety and organizational training. Supports Medical Technologists (MT) throughout laboratory operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum associate degree in laboratory or other related degree, and a minimum of 2 years laboratory experience required or a combination of education and experience.
  • Preferred minimum 2 years phlebotomy experience.
  • Preferred experience with Orchard software, Laboratory Information Systems, and EPIC.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Must be experienced in quality control, quality improvement, instrument troubleshooting, and problem resolution in laboratory testing

  • Maintains confidentiality of patients and their medical information.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including English usage, grammar, punctuation, and style.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Detailed oriented and excellent records maintenance skills.
  • Proactive individual with the ability to be a self-starter with strong independent decision-making skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to make evaluative judgments.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to function well while involved in multiple task assignments. Ability to concentrate on details and deal with constant interruption. Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Attends and completes in-service training as required.
  • Knowledge of HIPPA and other compliance requirements.
  • Follow all OSHA Safety rules and regulations and participates in annual safety trainings.
  • Ability to emulate ENA's mission, vision, and values.

Essential Functions%

  • Collecting samples of blood and other substances 25%
  • Performing lab tests on samples and analyzing results 25%
  • Ensuring quality control of samples. Adhering to a laboratory’s standards and policies 25%
  • Operating lab equipment, such as microscopes and cell counters. Resolve unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nursing personnel, mid-levels, or laboratory personnel; refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders. Logging test data into patients’ medical records 25%

  • Required travel between sites.
  • Hearing, visual acuity, talking.
  • Reaching, grabbing, holding – fine motor skills.
  • Extended periods in a stationary or standing position.
  • Repetitive motion such as entering data into computer-based programs.
  • Lift or move up to 25 pounds. Employee is expected to use appropriate ergonomics and tools such as hand carts for heavier loads.

Work Environment

  • Work Schedule is Monday- Friday, 8 am to 5 pm with a one-hour lunch.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. The noise level is usually quiet.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel or crouch and requires full range of body motion, manual and dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee is expected to use the appropriate tools provided such as hand carts to carry heavier loads.
  • This position requires eyesight (corrected or uncorrected) that allows the employee to accurately read job related materials, accurately read and record patient related information, and any other functions that require the employee to accurately see data.
  • High risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens and OPIM.
  • May need to travel if filling in for a phlebotomist at an outside sight.
  • Must be able to work overtime hours as needed to accomplish the mission of the organization.
  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations.
