This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Backend, Money Team based in the United States.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced backend engineering leader to shape the architecture of mission-critical financial infrastructure powering large-scale payment and money movement systems. In this role, you will influence technical strategy while remaining hands-on in designing and building highly reliable backend services. Working alongside cross-functional teams including Product, Finance, Risk, Compliance, and Engineering, you will deliver secure, scalable, and compliant financial solutions. - Design, develop, and scale backend services and APIs supporting payment processing, billing, subscriptions, settlements, reconciliation, ledger management, and money movement platforms.
- Lead the architecture and evolution of highly available, fault-tolerant distributed systems capable of processing high-value financial transactions with accuracy, reliability, and auditability.
- Provide technical leadership across multiple engineering teams, establishing long-term platform strategy and promoting best practices in system design, security, testing, observability, and operational excellence.
- Drive complex initiatives from technical planning through implementation, deployment, and production support while balancing immediate business needs with long-term maintainability.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Finance, Risk, Compliance, Operations, and engineering stakeholders to deliver secure, compliant, and scalable financial capabilities.
- Build and maintain integrations with external payment providers, banking partners, and financial service platforms.
- Mentor engineers, foster technical excellence, and contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes, service architecture, and engineering standards.
Requirements
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend development and distributed systems.
- At least 4 years of hands-on Java experience, including Spring Framework (Core, Web, Boot), Gradle, JUnit, JVM tuning, and performance optimization.
- Strong computer science fundamentals and proven experience designing scalable, resilient, and high-performance backend architectures.
- Extensive experience building or operating financial platforms involving payments, ledgers, settlements, reconciliation, billing, banking infrastructure, or money movement.
- Solid understanding of transactional integrity, financial data consistency, idempotency, auditability, and fault tolerance in distributed environments.
- Experience integrating with payment processors, banking partners, settlement systems, and card networks.
- Hands-on expertise with AWS services such as EKS, Aurora RDS, ElastiCache, DynamoDB, along with Docker, Kubernetes, relational databases, and NoSQL technologies.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, GitHub Actions, automated testing, monitoring tools such as Datadog, and modern DevOps practices.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to work effectively across globally distributed teams.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and driving technical excellence through leadership and best engineering practices.
