Job Description
SAP BI/BW Specialist – GFEBS Functional Transformation
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced SAP Business Intelligence/Business Warehouse (BI/BW) Specialist to support the analysis, documentation, and transformation of existing General Fund Enterprise Business System (GFEBS) reporting, data, and business intelligence capabilities for transition to future target systems.
The specialist will analyze existing GFEBS BI/BW reports, data models, queries, interfaces, calculations, business rules, and customizations to fully document current functionality and define the requirements necessary to reproduce or transform those capabilities within future target environments.
The position will specifically support functionality associated with:
- Statement of Transactions
- FB50 Reclassification Tool
- Electronic Funds Distribution
- MILPERS
- Defense Readiness Reporting System (DRRS)
- Spend Plan
The specialist will serve as a bridge between GFEBS functional processes, SAP BI/BW technical architecture, data teams, functional SMEs, and future target-system teams, ensuring that existing business requirements, data dependencies, and reporting capabilities are accurately understood and documented prior to transition.
Key Responsibilities
GFEBS BI/BW Analysis & Reverse Engineering
Analyze existing GFEBS BI/BW solutions supporting the identified capabilities to document current-state functionality, data sources, transformations, calculations, reporting logic, dependencies, and customizations.
Review existing BW queries, InfoProviders, InfoCubes, DataStore Objects (DSOs/ADSOs), transformations, extractors, data flows, characteristics, key figures, variables, calculated/restricted key figures, and custom objects, as applicable.
Trace reporting requirements from the end-user report or analytical product through the BW data model to the originating GFEBS/SAP transactional data.
Identify custom GFEBS logic, enhancements, interfaces, and reporting requirements that must be preserved or addressed during transition.
Requirements & Functional Decomposition
Work with functional SMEs and stakeholders to identify and document the underlying business requirements associated with existing GFEBS BI/BW capabilities rather than simply replicating legacy reports.
Document business processes and requirements including:
- Business purpose and use cases
- Data elements and authoritative sources
- Business rules and calculations
- Report filters and selection criteria
- Data transformations
- Organizational and financial hierarchies
- Reporting dimensions and measures
- Upstream and downstream dependencies
- Interfaces with external systems
- Security and data-access requirements
- Reporting frequency and data latency requirements
- Reconciliation and audit requirements
Translate existing GFEBS capabilities into functional requirements, technical requirements, data requirements, features/user stories, and acceptance criteria that can support future system design and implementation.
Source-to-Target & Transition Support
Develop comprehensive documentation describing how existing GFEBS BI/BW functionality operates and the requirements that must be satisfied by future target solutions.
Support development of source-to-target mappings once target-system architectures and data structures are defined.
Work with architects, developers, data engineers, and functional teams to ensure future solutions account for required GFEBS functionality, data, calculations, interfaces, and reporting requirements.
Identify potential gaps between existing GFEBS functionality and proposed target-system capabilities as target solutions are defined.
Support decisions regarding whether existing capabilities should be retained, redesigned, consolidated, replaced, or retired based on approved business requirements.
Data Mapping & Integration
Perform detailed data lineage analysis across GFEBS transactional data, SAP BI/BW reporting structures, interfaces, and external data sources.
Identify and document financial and business data elements required to support existing functionality, including, as applicable:
Fund, Funds Center, Functional Area, Commitment Item, Cost Center, WBS Element, Internal Order, Business Area, Fiscal Year/Period, Document Number, Document Type, Posting Date, Transaction Type, Vendor, Customer, GL Account, Amount, and other relevant reporting characteristics.
Identify dependencies on external or interfacing systems associated with MILPERS, DRRS, electronic funds distribution, transaction reporting, spend planning, and other supported capabilities.
Develop and maintain data lineage documentation, interface mappings, transformation rules, business-rule catalogs, and data dictionaries.
Validation & Testing
Support development of validation approaches to ensure transitioned functionality satisfies approved GFEBS business and reporting requirements.
Develop baseline GFEBS outputs that can be used to validate future target-system functionality.
Support data reconciliation and comparison of legacy GFEBS outputs against future-system outputs.
Develop test scenarios, expected results, and acceptance criteria based on documented GFEBS functionality.
Analyze discrepancies to determine whether differences originate from source data, transformation logic, business rules, configuration, interfaces, or implementation.
Functional Areas Supported
The specialist will provide BI/BW expertise supporting analysis and documentation of:
Statement of Transactions – Financial transaction reporting and reconciliation, including transaction-level financial activity and associated accounting attributes.
FB50 Reclassification Tool – Data, reporting, and business logic supporting journal-entry and reclassification activities and associated financial-document analysis.
Electronic Funds Distribution – Data and reporting functionality supporting distribution, tracking, and visibility of funding across applicable organizational and financial structures.
MILPERS – Data integration and reporting supporting military personnel-related financial activity and associated GFEBS financial impacts.
Defense Readiness Reporting System (DRRS) – GFEBS data, interfaces, and reporting capabilities supporting applicable readiness reporting requirements.
Spend Plan – Reporting and analytical capabilities supporting planning, execution monitoring, funding visibility, variance analysis, and comparison of planned versus actual financial execution.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, Finance, Accounting, Data Analytics, or related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 5+ years of SAP BI/BW experience, preferably within the Department of Defense or Federal Government.
- Hands-on experience with SAP BW data modeling, reporting, extraction, transformation, and query development.
- Experience analyzing SAP financial management data and reporting, preferably involving FI, FM, CO, MM, or related functional areas.
- Demonstrated ability to reverse-engineer existing SAP BI/BW solutions and trace report fields and calculations through BW to originating transactional data.
- Experience documenting data lineage, business rules, transformations, interfaces, and system dependencies.
- Experience developing functional requirements, technical requirements, data requirements, and acceptance criteria.
- Experience supporting ERP modernization, system transformation, legacy-system replacement, or data migration initiatives.
- Strong understanding of data reconciliation, validation, and testing methodologies.
- Ability to communicate SAP technical concepts to functional SMEs, business stakeholders, architects, developers, and program leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct GFEBS and/or GFEBS-SA experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with Army financial management processes and data.
- Experience with SAP ECC and SAP Business Warehouse environments.
- Knowledge of SAP BusinessObjects and other SAP reporting/analytics technologies used within Army environments.
- Experience with enterprise data and analytics platforms.
- Understanding of Army/DoD financial data standards, auditability, internal controls, and data lineage requirements.
- Experience working within Agile/SAFe environments and translating existing capabilities into Features, User Stories, and acceptance criteria.
- Experience supporting DoD ERP modernization or legacy-system transformation programs.
- Active or ability to obtain an appropriate DoD security clearance.
Key Deliverables
Expected deliverables may include GFEBS BI/BW report inventories, AS-IS architecture and data-flow documentation, report-to-source traceability matrices, data lineage documentation, business-rule catalogs, data dictionaries, functional and technical requirements, interface mappings, transformation logic documentation, gap analyses, requirements traceability matrices, test scenarios, baseline validation datasets, reconciliation results, and transition recommendations.
