Job Description
The Sr. Counselor, Lawyer Assistance Program has responsibility for providing clinical and consultative services to LAP clients and others seeking LAP consultations and services, and for maintaining the confidentiality of LAP clinical records in compliance with Federal confidentiality regulations. The Sr. Counselor assists with the development and provision of educational programming and outreach materials and modalities to members of the D.C. Bar, legal employers, and law schools and judges in the District of Columbia. The LAP is a free, confidential program for Bar members, judges and law students in the District of Columbia who are experiencing problems, such as addiction, mental health symptoms or stress, which may interfere with their personal or professional lives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conducts thorough clinical evaluations and provides in-person counseling, referrals and monitoring to clients with presenting problems related to substance use, mental health symptoms or other stressors.
- Conducts telephone intakes and bio-psycho-social assessments of new LAP clients to obtain personal mental health history, assess presenting problems, schedule clinical evaluations and provide overview of LAP services.
- Consults with legal employers, family members, and other concerned parties to provide clinical recommendations, guidance on communication, and appropriate referral resources.
- Serves as a source of clinical expertise and consultation for LAP staff.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date client records. Maintains the confidentiality of client files and information using processes, forms, case management software and records that conform to federal confidentiality regulations.
- Prepares reports and recommendations, upon client request/waiver, to legal employers, the courts, the Committee on Admissions, the Board of Professional Responsibility, and the Office of Disciplinary Counsel.
- Develops and prepares outreach and educational materials including PowerPoint presentations, tip sheets, newsletters, brochures, etc.
- Coordinates outreach and conducts educational programming to legal employers, law schools and other appropriate entities.
- Assists with planning and executing meetings to include the Lawyer Assistance Committee meetings and the Law Firm Wellness Consortium meetings. Drafts reports and minutes of meetings.
- Assists in recruitment and training of volunteers. Maintains relationships with volunteers and coordinates their engagement with LAP clients and programming.
- Must be available for occasional travel to ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs conference or other related meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Independent clinical licensure.
- Relevant experience in clinical setting providing direct adult clinical services, assessments and in-person counseling to individuals or families with mental health or substance use disorders.
- Excellent clinical knowledge and skill in conducting clinical assessments, diagnosis, motivational interviewing, and short-term counseling.
- Demonstrated knowledge, ability and experience effectively working with diverse populations.
- Excellent computer skills, to include experience using Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience with presenting educational content in a group setting.
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be detail oriented and deadline driven. Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must work well in a team environment and be able to interact, including in-person, with Bar members, volunteers, vendors, the public and Bar employees.
- Must work well under pressure, possess excellent organizational abilities, and able to manage several priorities in a day.
- Must be adaptable, creative, and self-motivated.
- Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Social Work/Counseling or equivalent.
- Certification in Addiction Counseling, Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), or Certified Employee Assistance Professional (CEAP).
- Experience providing mental health services to professionals in an outpatient or employee assistance setting.
- Experience conducting management consultations.
- Excellent presentation/public speaking skills.
- Experience with electronic case management systems.
This position is currently a hybrid position, with days worked in the office and days worked remotely. The hybrid status of this position may change at any time subject to the Bar’s discretion.
