This is a high-impact Staff Engineering opportunity focused on taking a recently launched AI-powered payments product through its next phase of growth.
You will operate with significant ownership, shaping problems from initial discovery and technical direction through production delivery and iteration.
The role combines deep technical engineering with product judgment, requiring you to move fluidly across architecture, infrastructure, integrations, and user experience.
You will work within a small, highly autonomous team where engineers are expected to identify the highest-value opportunities and act without waiting for perfectly defined requirements.
A major focus will be building payment and peer-to-peer experiences designed specifically for AI interfaces and expanding integrations across emerging AI platforms.
You will also help improve onboarding and end-to-end product experiences, balancing ambitious technical challenges with meticulous attention to detail.
This role is particularly well suited to an exceptional generalist engineer who thrives in ambiguity, uses AI extensively, and takes personal responsibility for the quality and impact of what they build.

• Own significant areas of the product end-to-end, from identifying problems and defining technical approaches through implementation, launch, measurement, and continuous iteration.
• Help drive the product through its next stage of 0-to-1 development, establishing scalable foundations while responding quickly to emerging customer and market needs.
• Design and build new payment and peer-to-peer transfer experiences optimized for AI-driven interfaces.
• Develop integrations across AI platforms, applications, payment ecosystems, and emerging agent-based technologies.
• Build the infrastructure, tooling, and product experiences needed to onboard new applications and integrations efficiently.
• Partner closely with Product to translate ambitious concepts into simple, intuitive, and highly usable experiences.
• Improve onboarding and overall user experience by identifying and eliminating friction that prevents successful product adoption.
• Apply first-principles thinking to ambiguous technical and product challenges, making pragmatic decisions without waiting for complete information.
• Move across different parts of the technical stack based on where the highest-impact problems exist rather than remaining constrained to a narrow area of ownership.
• Make architectural decisions that balance scalability, reliability, usability, delivery speed, and long-term maintainability.
• Use AI extensively to increase engineering velocity and output while maintaining independent technical reasoning, judgment, and accountability.
• Contribute to a culture of high standards, thorough execution, and continuous product improvement within a small, autonomous engineering environment.

Requirements

• Exceptional engineering fundamentals and technical reasoning, with the ability to break down unfamiliar, complex, and ambiguous problems into effective solutions.
• Demonstrated high agency and ownership, with a track record of identifying important problems independently and taking responsibility for solving them.
• Experience building and shipping meaningful products, systems, or technical initiatives end-to-end rather than operating solely within a narrowly defined engineering function.
• Strong systems thinking, including the ability to design architectures, evaluate trade-offs, and make pragmatic technical decisions while maintaining development velocity.
• Exceptional attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality, reliability, usability, and maintainability beyond simply getting a solution to work.
• Strong product judgment and an understanding that excellent engineering encompasses the complete user experience, not only the underlying technology.
• Comfort operating in ambiguous, fast-changing environments where priorities evolve and engineers are expected to determine what matters most.
• Ability to work effectively in an AI-native engineering environment, using AI aggressively as a productivity tool while independently evaluating, challenging, and taking responsibility for its output.
• Strong intrinsic motivation, with a desire for meaningful ownership, responsibility, and measurable product impact.
• Experience working effectively within small, highly autonomous engineering teams is highly valuable.
• Experience as a founding engineer or early engineer at a high-growth startup is a plus.
• Experience founding and building a company, product, or significant independent project is desirable.
• Demonstrated experience taking products from initial concept through launch and subsequent iteration is beneficial.
• Experience building AI-native products, AI agents, developer tooling, payments, fintech, crypto, or DeFi is advantageous.
• Familiarity with MCP or other emerging agent protocols is a plus.
• Candidates are expected to demonstrate practical AI proficiency, with AI integrated meaningfully into their day-to-day engineering workflow.
