Job Description: Position Summary
Salary: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent 27 Hole Golf Course ($56,036 - $70,045/yr)
Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $84,054/year, which is the maximum salary for this position as of December 2025.
Benefits: Full City Benefits Package. The City of St. George covers 100% of the premiums for the High Deductible health plan for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. New hires also receive 2 weeks of vacation time during their first year of employment, one of which is available to the employee the first day of employment.
Position Summary
Under direction of the Golf Course Superintendent, manages upkeep of City of St. George municipal golf course, including assignment of work duties involved in maintaining course and equipment used on course. This is a highly skilled position involving supervisory responsibilities in maintenance of a golf course.
Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)
1. Assigns and supervises daily work of full- and part-time golf course employees. Evaluates employees for merit increases.
2. Determines need for seed, sod, water, cutting, and raking of grass on fairways, greens, and tees. Evaluates disease and pest problems and controls. Calibrates spreaders and sprayers.
3. Applies or assigns subordinates to assist in application of pesticides, fertilizer, fungicides, and insecticides to treat the course as necessary.
4. Maintains existing watering systems in proper operating condition, including controllers. May be involved in redesign and modification of current watering systems, sprinklers, and/or controllers. Locates and repairs power failures related to sprinkling systems. Diverts water in to and out of irrigation pond at any hour of day or night as per water schedule. Maintains irrigation pond=s water level.
5, Constructs and/or renovates tees, greens, mounds, drains, cart paths, etc.
6. Ensures proper care and cultivation of turf, shrubs, trees, and flowers, including pruning, trimming, and spraying.
7. Maintains records of equipment and supplies used, and maintains records and schedules applications of fertilizers, sprays, and chemicals recording their use for each season. Assists in preparing reports reflecting total hours of personnel and equipment used.
8. Checks fluid levels and performs service and minor repairs on equipment and vehicles as needed. Ensures all workers are trained in proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
9. Assists in budget preparation process by making recommendations to Golf Course Superintendent.
10. Performs all duties required of Golf Course Maintenance Worker.
11. Sets up golf course for tournaments. This includes picking cup and tee marker placement and marking hazards, out of bounds, and drop areas as pertaining to the rules of golf, etc.
12. Performs other related duties as required.
Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions
Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to push, pull, or lift medium weights. Difficult working conditions. May stand, walk, or sit uncomfortably for extended periods. Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease. Irregular hours, including some weekends, holidays, special projects, etc. Intermittent exposure to stress as result of human behavior.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. College or vocational training closely related to subjects in golf course maintenance, turf research, plant science, agronomy horticulture, or botany helpful but not required.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years full time paid work experience in maintenance of golf course, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
Must have a basic understanding of golf course design principles.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License (CDL rating desired) must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
- Possess, or obtain within first year of employment, a valid Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License.
Knowledge of:
- The rules and etiquette of golf.
- Toro Site Pro desired (basic knowledge).
- Maintain simple records.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, department heads, employees, the public, and officials and employees of other jurisdictions.
- Communicate in Spanish a plus.

The City of St. George covers 100% of the premiums for the High Deductible health plan for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. The City also offers two Traditional medical plans. Employees have the option to upgrade to one of the City’s Traditional medical plans with a lower deductible by paying a premium for the selected plan. The City also offers voluntary benefits including dental insurance, vision insurance, flexible spending and health savings accounts, and retirement savings plans at the employee’s cost and discretion. Health care coverage begins the first day of employment.
Retirement
The City fully funds an employee pension plan through Utah Retirement Systems for each active full-time employee.
Paid Time Off
Paid time off (PTO) hours are accrued according to the number of hours paid. Based on a full 40-hour work week, paid time off is accrued as follows: 2 weeks for years 0 through 3.99, 3 weeks for years 4 through 11.99, and 4 weeks for 12+ years.
Holidays
The City has 13 paid holidays each year. If unused, holiday time can be used as Paid Time Off.
Sick Leave
The City provides 12 days of sick leave each year. You can accrue sick leave without limit.
Life Insurance
All active full-time employees enrolled in the employer sponsored medical plan are provided with $50,000 worth of life insurance. Spouses and dependents are provided with $5000 and $2500 respectively. Full-time employees are also provided with an AD&D policy for $50,000.
Long Term Disability
All active full-time employees enrolled in the employer sponsored medical plan are provided with LTD insurance benefits.
Educational Assistance Program
The City offers a reimbursement of 75% of the tuition and required student fees, up to $2,000 per fiscal year, for pre-approved courses for full-time employees when the employee meets the eligibility requirements. This reimbursement is not a guarantee, it is subject to the approval of the Department Head. Reimbursement will be reduced by any other financial aid that does not have to be repaid, such as the GI Bill, scholarships and grants.
Employee Assistance Program
The City offers an Employee Assistance Program to give full-time employees an additional level of support for personal, financial, and family issues. The Employee Assistance Program is 100% Confidential, offers a 24/7 Crisis Support Line, and there are no limits for sessions with a licensed counselor.
Recreation Benefit
Free or discounted access to all 4 City Golf Courses, swimming pools and Recreation Center is available to all full-time employees.
Note: Golf course privileges are based on availability. Employees can book a tee-time within 24 hours or the same day, but may be turned away if there are no available tee-times. If you happen to be golfing with at least 2 paying customers; tee times can be set with more advance notice, but are still based on availability. Red Hills Golf Course will not be available to schedule tee times in advance --- walk on play based on availability only.
Voluntary Benefits
Short-Term Disability, Supplemental Life Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance, Accident Insurance, and Hospital Indemnity Insurance; each are available on a voluntary basis to all Active Full-Time employees enrolled in an employer sponsored medical plan.
