Early Intervention Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Coordinator – Children's Specialized Hospital, RWJBarnabas Health

At Children's Specialized Hospital, part of RWJBarnabas Health, Early Intervention Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Coordinators play an important role in supporting the delivery of high-quality, family-centered services to infants and toddlers with developmental delays and disabilities. As a Clinical Coordinator, you will provide direct supervision, mentorship, clinical guidance, and professional support to assigned speech-language pathology staff providing services in children's natural environments, including homes and community settings. You will work collaboratively with Directors, Managers, and other Education/Clinical Coordinators to promote clinical excellence, ensure compliance with New Jersey Early Intervention System (NJEIS) requirements, and support consistent, effective, and discipline-specific speech-language pathology services throughout the program.

This position is ideal for an experienced Early Intervention speech-language pathologist who enjoys developing other professionals, providing clinical leadership, and helping ensure that children and families receive exceptional services during the critical first years of development.

A typical day for an Early Intervention Speech-Language Pathologist Clinical Coordinator may include:

  • Providing direct supervision, mentorship, clinical guidance, and support to assigned speech-language pathology staff providing services in home and community-based environments.
  • Conducting regular direct observations of assigned staff and providing constructive feedback to promote clinical growth, professional development, and high-quality service delivery.
  • Completing required 90-day reviews and Annual Performance Reviews (APRs) for assigned staff in collaboration with the Director and Manager.
  • Assisting the Director and Manager in ensuring all required supervisory, performance, and NJEIS documentation is completed accurately and within established timelines.
  • Completing hospital and Department of Health/NJEIS supervisory paperwork and maintaining required supervisory documentation.
  • Providing guidance to staff in completing state-required documentation related to Initial Evaluations, assessments, BDI documentation, IFSP meetings, progress reports, session notes, and other NJEIS requirements.
  • Monitoring the daily schedules of assigned staff and notifying the Manager of openings, cancellations, scheduling challenges, and other service needs.
  • Completing annual self-assessment requirements, including clinical record reviews and session note reviews.
  • Providing training and clinical education during staff meetings and regular conference calls with assigned staff and other Education/Clinical Coordinators.
  • Providing supervision, consultation, and guidance to TET members assigned to the Coordinator.
  • Remaining current in evidence-based speech-language pathology practices and current clinical techniques for infants and toddlers eligible for the Early Intervention Program.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of discipline-specific speech-language assessment tools, developmental checklists, and evaluation procedures used to identify children's communication, feeding, swallowing, social communication, and functional needs, as applicable to the scope of practice.
  • Supporting staff in understanding the distinction between strategies that fall within the scope of a licensed speech-language pathologist and strategies that may appropriately be addressed by other qualified members of the IFSP team.
  • Using the New Jersey Birth to Three Early Learning Standards as a common framework for understanding and communicating developmentally appropriate expectations for infants and toddlers.
  • Supporting the delivery of effective, evidence-based speech-language pathology services that are relevant to the population served and responsive to each child's individual strengths and needs.
  • Applying knowledge of typical speech, language, communication, feeding, and swallowing development, as applicable to the clinician's scope of practice.
  • Supporting staff in selecting, utilizing, and evaluating the effectiveness of appropriate assessment and intervention methods.
  • Providing clinical consultation regarding communication development, language acquisition, social communication, speech development, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), feeding and swallowing concerns, and caregiver coaching, as appropriate to the clinician's scope of practice.
  • Communicating effectively with children, families, caregivers, speech-language pathologists, and interdisciplinary team members in both oral and written formats and in formal and informal situations.
  • Ensuring all required clinical, supervisory, and administrative paperwork is completed professionally, accurately, and in a timely manner.
  • Meeting productivity expectations by seeking opportunities within the department when cancellations, no-shows, or low census occur.
  • Taking responsibility for providing supervision and consultation related to clinical performance.
  • Actively contributing to performance improvement plans and effectively utilizing feedback to support professional development.
  • Providing suggestions and recommendations to the Director and Manager regarding opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Early Intervention services.
  • Collaborating with the Director and Manager to promote consistency and uniformity in the provision of discipline-specific speech-language pathology services.
  • Traveling throughout assigned service areas as needed to provide staff supervision, direct observation, consultation, training, and clinical support.

To Be Considered:

To be considered for this opportunity, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
  • Licensure: Current and unrestricted New Jersey Speech-Language Pathologist license as required by the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs and applicable New Jersey regulations.
  • Certification: Current Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from ASHA, or other credentials permitted under applicable New Jersey Department of Health Early Intervention personnel standards.
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Early Intervention, with demonstrated experience providing speech-language pathology services to infants and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities.
  • Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA Part C, NJEIS requirements, New Jersey-specific Early Intervention policies, infant and toddler development, communication development, developmental assessment, IFSP processes, and family-centered intervention.
  • Clinical Skills: Demonstrated knowledge of speech-language assessment tools, developmental expectations, evidence-based intervention techniques, caregiver coaching, clinical documentation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Supervisory Skills: Demonstrated ability to provide direct supervision, mentorship, clinical consultation, staff observation, professional feedback, and performance guidance to speech-language pathology staff.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with families, speech-language pathologists, service coordinators, interdisciplinary professionals, Directors, and Managers.
  • Documentation: Ability to complete and/or oversee required hospital, NJEIS, Department of Health, clinical, supervisory, and performance documentation accurately and within required timelines.
  • Requirements: Valid New Jersey driver's license, reliable transportation, and automobile insurance with the ability to travel throughout assigned service areas.
  • Schedule: Ability to work a schedule that supports the supervisory and clinical needs of assigned staff and travel throughout the designated service territory for staff observations, meetings, training, and clinical support.
