Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Development Engineer - Mobile & Commerce (Apprentice) based in India.
This is a 12-month remote apprenticeship designed for an emerging software engineer who wants hands-on experience building production-grade systems.
You will work alongside experienced engineers on real engineering charters that contribute directly to a large-scale commerce and business platform.
Depending on your team, you may work across domain services, accounting and ledger systems, payment infrastructure, document rendering, or developer tooling.
The role offers meaningful ownership from early in the programme, including designing, implementing, testing, instrumenting, and shipping production code.
You will develop practical expertise in distributed systems, APIs, containers, Kubernetes, reliability, and software design practices.
Mentorship, technical reviews, design discussions, and structured progression will support your development throughout the apprenticeship.
The programme also provides an opportunity to demonstrate your capabilities for potential full-time conversion after successful completion.
- Join an engineering team with a defined charter and contribute to production-facing software development initiatives.
- Design and implement domain services using technologies such as Go, protobuf, and ConnectRPC, taking services from architectural decisions through production deployment.
- Contribute to ledger and accounting systems, including commerce-event processing, double-entry accounting, chart-of-accounts translation, and journal APIs.
- Work on payment infrastructure, including provider integrations, capability registries, idempotency, retries, and replay mechanisms designed to prevent duplicate transactions.
- Contribute to document-rendering systems and cross-runtime conformance testing across Go, JavaScript, and Dart implementations.
- Work on developer tooling and Model Context Protocol (MCP) initiatives, including protobuf-based code generation, manifest generation, and governance mechanisms for safe AI-agent API access.
- Write architectural decision records (ADRs), design documentation, technical proposals, and clear engineering notes.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and design reviews while incorporating feedback and communicating engineering trade-offs.
- Develop, test, instrument, and ship production-quality software with increasing levels of ownership.
- Build practical knowledge of distributed systems concepts, including consistency, retries, idempotency, fault handling, and network reliability.
- Work with containers and Kubernetes and troubleshoot deployment and runtime issues.
- Take ownership of the operational context of the systems you contribute to, including supporting production services when required.
- Progress through a structured programme that moves from an initial scoped project toward ownership of a substantial engineering charter.
- Participate in hardening, migration, documentation, and handoff activities as projects mature.
- Completed a term in a recognized open-source mentorship or contribution programme, with evidence of merged and reviewed contributions to a real software project.
- Strong working proficiency in Go, or demonstrated depth in another systems programming language combined with evidence of the ability to learn new technologies quickly.
- Understanding of distributed-systems fundamentals, including idempotency, retries, consistency models, failure scenarios, and unreliable networks.
- Familiarity with containers and Kubernetes, including hands-on experience diagnosing common deployment or pod-startup issues.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear technical documentation, including design documents, issue discussions, commit messages, and architectural proposals.
- A track record of sustained contribution to a single technical project over multiple months is highly valued.
- Experience participating in public code reviews or technical discussions where you can demonstrate thoughtful reasoning, collaboration, and openness to changing your approach.
- Projects or experience involving financial systems, correctness invariants, transactional workflows, or multi-tenant isolation are particularly valuable.
- Conference presentations, technical blog posts, upstream proposals, specifications, or other examples of technical communication are a plus.
- Strong curiosity about the business and customer problems behind engineering requirements.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with experienced engineers and communicate technical decisions clearly.
- Graduation timeline must allow for full-time conversion at the end of the apprenticeship term.
- Ability to work remotely from India throughout the programme.
- Programme start date: September 2026.
- 12-month full-time apprenticeship within an engineering organization.
- 50,000 monthly stipend.
- Fully remote opportunity in India.
- Hands-on experience working on real production systems and engineering initiatives.
- Structured technical learning, mentorship, and guidance from experienced software engineers.
- Opportunity to work across distributed systems, payments, commerce, developer tooling, APIs, and cloud-native infrastructure.
- Progressive ownership, moving from a scoped starter project to a substantial engineering charter.
- Exposure to architecture reviews, ADRs, code reviews, production releases, hardening, and system operations.
- Opportunity to present technical designs and defend engineering trade-offs.
- Potential for full-time conversion following successful completion of the apprenticeship.
- Opportunity to contribute to systems operating at significant scale in a global, remote-first engineering environment.
