This additional position requires the individual to be onsite five (5) days a week, Monday - Friday 7:30AM to 4:00PM.

About the role

The Machine Operator is responsible for the programming, setup, and operation of laser cutting and press brake equipment to produce high-quality, customized metal components. This role requires strong technical expertise in reading and interpreting drawings, planning material usage, and ensuring accurate and efficient production.

Working closely with Engineering and Production teams, the Machine Operator supports workflow optimization, maintains equipment through routine checks and basic maintenance, and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives. The position also plays a key role in quality assurance, safe material handling, and mentoring junior operators within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

What you'll do

  • Review and interpret technical drawings to ensure accurate understanding of product requirements; identify and escalate discrepancies or concerns to the Lead Hand and Engineering team.
  • Plan and organize production workflow by reviewing job requirements and sequencing material staging to support efficient cutting and forming operations.
  • Program (nest) parts for laser cutting using appropriate software, ensuring optimal material utilization and accuracy.
  • Operate CNC equipment including laser cutters and press brakes, performing machine start-up, shutdown, program execution, troubleshooting, and die setup/changeovers as required.
  • Generate and adjust programs at the machine (e.g., press brake programming) to meet custom job specifications.
  • Verify quality of produced parts against drawings and established standards; perform inspections and support continuous quality improvement.
  • Coordinate part flow by reviewing layouts, compiling part lists, and ensuring timely delivery to the appropriate downstream operations.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes and manually load materials as required to support production activities.
  • Perform routine first-level maintenance, including calibration, inspections, and daily safety checks to ensure equipment reliability and compliance.
  • Support team effectiveness by mentoring junior operators and contributing to training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in alignment with company policies and health & safety regulations.
  • Accurately track and record material usage and labor hours for job costing and production reporting.
  • Work collaboratively and safely with colleagues in cross-functional roles and departments for related projects.
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma

AND

CNC Operator Certificate or comparable certification, an asset.

AND

At least 2 years of experience working with a CNC machine.

  • Knowledge of various materials expected to be cut for customized products
  • Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings and instructions.
  • Experience working with drawings at scale and not at scale to understand details
  • Experience working with customized requirements to prepare the machine
  • Experience engineering samples for review and updates
  • Experience reviewing and identifying processes to recommend improvements and efficiencies
  • Experience working with engineering or technical advisors to identify and make corrections to drawings.
  • Experience following standard operating procedures and adhering to workplace health and safety procedures.

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Working in a manufacturing environment daily
  • Extensive periods of standing
  • Ability to complete crane/hoist training.
  • Remain alert for extended periods, paying keen attention to detail
  • Ability to lift 23 kilograms (50 lbs)
  • Must be able to wear standard PPE in a manufacturing plant
