Job Description

Associate Cloud Automation Engineer

US-MA-Boston

Job ID: 2026-7413
Type: Regular Full-Time
# of Openings: 1
Category: OPERATIONS
Remote - United States

Responsibilities

The Associate Cloud Automation Engineer supports the day-to-day monitoring, maintenance, and automation of NWN's cloud operational environment. This entry-level role is an opportunity to build hands-on, production experience with AWS, Python scripting, and GitHub-based version control while working alongside senior engineers on real automation initiatives. Success in this role depends as much on clear, proactive communication as on technical execution. Keeping the team informed of progress, blockers, and unexpected issues along the way will be key to success in the role.

  • Assist in writing and maintaining Python scripts to automate routine, repetitive cloud operations tasks.
  • Support day-to-day operations within AWS, including monitoring resources, provisioning approved services, and troubleshooting under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Use GitHub for version control, including committing code, creating branches, opening pull requests, and incorporating review feedback.
  • Proactively communicate progress, blockers, and unexpected issues to the team and management, in writing and verbally, so problems surface early rather than at deadline.
  • Document scripts, runbooks, and configuration changes so other team members can follow and maintain the work.
  • Participate in testing and validating automation and scripts before they are promoted to production.
  • Collaborate with senior cloud engineers to learn best practices for automation, monitoring, and support of cloud environments.
  • Help triage and remediate routine issues in cloud environments, escalating appropriately when outside current scope of knowledge.
  • Continue building technical skills in AWS, Python, and related automation and DevOps tooling through on-the-job learning, training, and certification.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to streamline routine cloud operations activities.
  • Assist with maintaining operational documentation, knowledge articles, and runbooks to support team consistency.
  • Participate in team discussions and learning opportunities related to cloud automation, monitoring, and support practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, preferred
  • Hands-on exposure to cloud operations, automation, DevOps tooling, or related technical support activities preferred
  • 0-2 years of relevant experience in cloud technologies, scripting, or IT operations, including internship, coursework, personal projects, or professional experience
  • Cursory or working knowledge of core AWS services, such as EC2, S3, IAM, and CloudWatch.
  • Basic proficiency in Python for scripting and task automation.
  • Familiarity with GitHub and core Git workflows, including clone, commit, push, pull, branch, and pull request.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly and promptly report progress, interruptions, or unexpected issues.
  • Comfortable asking questions and escalating issues rather than letting them stall silently.
  • Eagerness to learn cloud automation tools and best practices in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated comfort with adopting emerging AI tools and technologies to optimize processes, improve collaboration, and drive operational effectiveness.
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner certification, or similar
