Job Description

Position Summary

The HVAC / Steamfitter Journeyman Installer is responsible for installing, assembling, maintaining, and repairing HVAC, steam, and piping systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. This position performs layout, fabrication, equipment installation, testing, and troubleshooting in accordance with project specifications, industry standards, and safety requirements. The Journeyman Installer works independently and collaboratively with field crews to deliver high-quality workmanship while supporting project schedules and customer satisfaction.

Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesInstallation & Fabrication
  • Install HVAC systems, steam systems, piping, and related mechanical equipment according to drawings and specifications.
  • Perform layout and field measurements for piping, ductwork, and equipment installation.
  • Fabricate and assemble piping systems using various materials and methods.
  • Install valves, pumps, boilers, chillers, air handling units, and associated equipment.
  • Perform equipment rigging and setting in accordance with safety standards.
  • Ensure all installations meet project requirements, codes, and manufacturer specifications.
Maintenance & Repairs
  • Diagnose and repair HVAC, steam, and piping system issues.
  • Perform system modifications, replacements, and upgrades as required.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and testing on installed systems.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Verify system performance and functionality through testing and startup procedures.
Quality & Safety
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and jobsite requirements.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Inspect work to ensure quality standards and compliance with specifications.
  • Identify and report safety hazards or field issues to supervision.
  • Utilize proper tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Team Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with foremen, project managers, and other trades to coordinate work activities.
  • Mentor and assist apprentices and less experienced team members.
  • Communicate project progress, material needs, and field issues to supervisors.
  • Support project schedules and productivity goals.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Union training is preferred; non-union candidates must possess a minimum of five (5) years of HVAC and/or steam fitting installation experience.
  • Journeyman certification or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Experience working on commercial, industrial, and institutional projects.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, steam systems, piping, and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Familiarity with applicable building codes and industry standards.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proficient in HVAC and steam fitting installation techniques and best practices.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment safely.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project conditions and priorities.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed primarily on active construction sites and in occupied facilities.
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • May require work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and varying weather conditions.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.

Salary: $23.59-$40.09 per hour

Pay is based on the current UA Local 22 union wage scale. Compensation will be determined by union classification and experience. In addition to hourly wages, employees receive employer-paid fringe benefits including health insurance, pension, annuity, and training benefits as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
