Meat Clerk (Retail Service Counter)

Position: Meat Clerk
Location: Summerhill Market – Rosedale
Department: Meat
Reports To: Meat Manager

Position Summary

As a Meat Clerk, you will play a key role in delivering a first-class shopping experience by serving customers at our full-service meat and seafood counter, preparing products for sale, merchandising fresh displays, and maintaining the highest standards of quality, cleanliness, and food safety.

Key ResponsibilitiesCustomer Service
  • Provide friendly, knowledgeable, and professional customer service at the meat and seafood service counter.
  • Assist customers with selecting fresh meats and seafood while answering questions regarding products, preparation methods, cooking techniques, and recommendations.
  • Cut, portion, weigh, wrap, label, and price products to customer specifications.
  • Suggest complementary products and meal ideas to enhance the customer shopping experience.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally while maintaining Summerhill Market's high service standards.
Product Preparation
  • Prepare meats and seafood for retail sale following company recipes, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Portion, trim, marinate, skewer, season, grind, or package products as required.
  • Wrap, label, and date products accurately.
  • Monitor product quality, freshness, appearance, and shelf life throughout the day.
  • Remove products that no longer meet company quality standards.
Merchandising & Stocking
  • Stock fresh meat, poultry, seafood, and value-added products in refrigerated display cases and self-serve coolers.
  • Merchandise displays to maximize freshness, presentation, and sales.
  • Rotate inventory using First In, First Out (FIFO) principles.
  • Perform regular date checks and reduce waste through effective inventory management.
  • Replenish displays throughout the day to maintain full and attractive presentations.
Inventory & Receiving
  • Assist with receiving deliveries and inspecting products for quality and accuracy.
  • Store products safely in coolers and freezers while maintaining proper rotation.
  • Assist with inventory counts and stock organization.
  • Report shortages, quality concerns, damaged products, or equipment issues to management.
Food Safety & Sanitation
  • Maintain exceptional standards of cleanliness throughout the department.
  • Clean and sanitize counters, slicers, grinders, knives, equipment, workstations, sinks, coolers, and display cases.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, allergen, HACCP, and temperature monitoring procedures.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment and safely use knives and department equipment.
  • Comply with all Workplace Health & Safety policies and procedures.
Teamwork
  • Work collaboratively with the Meat Manager and fellow team members to achieve daily sales and operational goals.
  • Support other Fresh Departments as required.
  • Assist with opening and closing procedures.
  • Participate in training and continuously develop product knowledge and customer service skills.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a meat department, grocery store, butcher shop, seafood counter, deli, restaurant, or food production environment is considered an asset.
  • Passion for food and delivering outstanding customer service.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working in refrigerated environments.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and perform repetitive tasks throughout the shift.
  • Flexible availability including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation for entry level retail or kitchen roles starts at minimum wage ($17.60/hr) and will increase based on your experience and performance.
