Job Description

KLR is one of the fastest growing accounting firms in New England. Due to department growth, we are seeking a Not for Profit (NFP) Tax Manager to join our firm based in any of our New England offices, Andover, Boston, Newport, or Providence, on a flexible hybrid basis.

As a Manager on our Tax Team, you will utilize your educational background, technical expertise, advisory mindset, and organizational skills as you work directly with clients of the Firm.

Position Description:

  • Serve as client's trusted advisor, demonstrate knowledge of industry trends, identify client issues and conflicts; proactively communicate solution options to client and team.
  • Manage staff on engagement deliverables (such as tax returns, work papers, etc.), complete technical and strategic reviews as a member of the financial engagement review.
  • Ensure compliance with quality control standards; timely delivery and on budget.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to provide advisory guidance to clients regarding exempt organization tax return matters, including private foundation and public charity compliance, planning, and reporting issues.
  • Utilize tax preparation software to prepare, review and process complex tax returns.
  • Prepare and review forms 990, 990-PF and 990-T in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Advise clients on IRS and state tax notices and correspondence related to exempt organizations, including private foundations, public charities, Form 990-series filings, and state unrelated business income matters.
  • Identify opportunities to support clients proactively through technical research, issue resolution, and practical recommendations that address federal and state exempt organization tax risks.
  • Ensure both that clients comply with all applicable authorities, while at the same time minimizing their tax and reporting burdens.
  • Comply with all firm policies and standards and ensure that client service teams are also in compliance.
  • Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines to match internal and client expectations for timely delivery of service.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply current tax practices.
  • Identify when research is needed; clearly and concisely frame issues to be researched; clearly and concisely report and communicate the analysis.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to client engagement team members.
  • Develop, train, and supervise associate and supervisor level team members.
  • Work closely with tax partners to satisfy the needs with planning compliance.

Position Requirements:

  • BS Degree in Accounting
  • Master's degree in Taxation or related field preferred
  • Active CPA license, Enrolled Agent (EA) credential, or JD with a valid law license required
  • 5+ years of federal exempt organizations tax experience
  • Public Accounting Tax experience preferred
  • Strong review, compliance, and advisory skills related to Forms 990, 990-PF and 990-T information returns.
  • Experience researching and responding to IRS and state notices, including matters involving exempt status, private foundation rules, public charity reporting, and state unrelated business income filings.
  • Ability to manage all aspects of client engagements and related expectations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing throughout all levels of organization, both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory ability, strong operational and project management skills.

We are seeking a full-time candidate. Normal hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with expected overtime during our peak season: April to May and October to November and sporadically throughout the rest of the year. These periods require increasing normal weekly hours, which may include weekends.

Pay Range:

The salary range for this position is included below. Individual salaries within this range do not include benefits and bonus potential and are determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education, knowledge, skills, and geographic location.

$120,000.00 - $140,000.00
