About This Position
Position Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient pre-operation inspection, operation, and post-operation inspection of haul trucks, water trucks, skid steers, backhoes, dredges, portable plant equipment, and other assigned machinery. This role supports the excavation, hauling, processing, and stockpiling of soil, rock, and aggregate materials. Operators play a critical part in maintaining production targets, promoting a strong safety culture, and supporting plant housekeeping and maintenance efforts.
Principal Duties and Accountabilities (Essential Functions)
• Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections of assigned equipment and report any issues or concerns immediately.
• Safely operate haul trucks, water trucks, skid steers, backhoes, dredges, portable plant equipment, and other heavy machinery as assigned.
• Support plant operations through material handling, stockpiling, feeding crushers/screens, and loading/unloading as needed.
• Complete housekeeping assignments, including cleanup and debris removal to maintain safe and efficient work areas (“Ground Man” duties).
• Assist in servicing and performing minor maintenance on plant equipment and mobile equipment.
• Conduct area safety audits and promptly report any hazards or unsafe conditions.
• Operate equipment in varying terrain, including slopes, rough, and uneven ground.
• Responsible for completing area audits.
• Always maintains work area and equipment in a safe and clean condition.
• Responsible for abiding by and supporting all company and plant safety policies, rules and procedures as well as M.S.H.A regulations.

Required Skills and Abilities
• Strong working knowledge of heavy equipment operation practices in mining or aggregates settings.
• Good mechanical aptitude with ability to perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
• Self-motivated with the ability to supervise own work with minimal supervision.
• Commitment to working safely in a fast-paced, high-risk environment.
• Basic recordkeeping skills for equipment inspections and logs.
Education & Experience
• High School Diploma or GED preferred.
• One (1) or more years of experience operating heavy mobile equipment (e.g., haul trucks, water trucks, loaders, excavators) strongly preferred.
• Previous aggregates, mining, construction, or quarry experience a plus.
• Familiarity with MSHA safety standards preferred.
Other Qualifications
• Ability to travel occasionally (including overnight stays) up to one (1) week at a time if business needs require.
• Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and varying shifts as needed to meet production demands.
• Must successfully complete required safety training and demonstrate proficiency in safe equipment operation.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical equipment and large mobile machinery. The role involves regular exposure to outdoor elements, including extreme seasonal temperatures, humid conditions, dry and dusty environments, and varying weather. Employees may frequently work at heights and traverse rough, uneven, or sloped terrain. Occasional exposure to chemicals, solvents, fumes, acids, grease, and fuels may occur. Work may also be performed in confined or restricted spaces. The noise level in the work environment is typically loud, requiring the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hearing protection, hard hats, and safety glasses.

• Ability to perform job task assignments 8 to 12 hours per day, 5 days a week and occasional weekends.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. ground to shoulder height and up to 75lbs. occasionally.
• Ability to mount and dismount mobile equipment via ladders, stairs, and grab irons.
• Ability to operate heavy mining equipment and aggregate production equipment on rough terrain while seated for prolonged periods.
• Ability to work around and on water for up to 12 hours per day.
• Ability to manipulate equipment controls including steering wheels, joysticks, levers, and switches.
• Ability to work safely in and around other mobile equipment in often-congested areas in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to use/wear personal protective equipment, respirators, hearing protection, gloves, protective eyewear, hardhats, protective clothing, and industrial footwear.
• Ability to hear and discriminate between sounds to be aware of surroundings.
• Ability to have full range of motion for all extremities/spine.
• Frequent and prolonged sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, twisting, reaching, and grasping for periods extending up to 12 hours.
• Ability to work on stairs, ladders, raised platforms and flat surfaces at varying heights.
• Ability to shovel spilled aggregate material, mud, and rock for up to 12 hours with breaks.•
