About This Position

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To Provide for essential eye care needs of the people utilizing Kanakanak Hospital & the surrounding community/village health clinics.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Education/licensure/certification: Must hold an active Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited American college and be Nationally Certified and Licensed by the State of Alaska to practice optometry, including an unrestricted diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical endorsement. This provider is eligible to work with an outside US state optometry license, however, must receive State of Alaska licensure within one year of hire and maintain an unrestricted Alaska licensure continuously thereafter.
  1. Experience: Three years of experience as Optometrist desired, Hospital setting experience is preferred. Experience in urgent eye care management is important.
  1. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skillset necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned unit in a rural eyecare setting and under a limited access setting. The provider must demonstrate extensive knowledge of ocular pathology in relation to patients of all ages (womb to tomb), and all demographics and to provide the care needed as described in the assigned unit's procedures."
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Diagnose, manage, and treat conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system. Examine eyes and visual systems, diagnose problems or impairments, prescribe corrective lenses, and provide treatment options that are patient focused and offer hopes for optimal success in outcomes. Prescribe appropriate therapeutic options to treat specific eye conditions, including medications, therapies, and interventions such as procedures and surgeries or other evidence-based management options consistent with scientific literature reviews Refers cases appropriately where licensure, facility, provider, or other limitations that limit the optimal benefit to the patient's condition.
  2. Determine each patient's functional visual acuity, field of vision and ocular health status.
  3. Advise patients about proper eye hygiene and care.
  4. Evaluate patients for the presence of ophthalmic manifestations of systemic pathology and refer patients to appropriate healthcare providers as needed
  5. Provide orientation, technical guidance, clinical instructions, and assistance on eye care matters to the Community Health Aides.
  6. Works in coordination with and under the supervision of the Optometry Manager/Optometrist to direct, administer and conduct both in-house and on-site field clinics at BBAHC Kanakanak Hospital and its affiliated villages.
  7. Must be culturally sensitive to patients and co-workers.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is done in both a nom1al office setting and remotely in field clinics Work is performed in a clinical setting. Must be able to see, hear, speak, walk, sit, bend, kneel, and lift and carry up to 100 pounds with or without accommodation. Requires travel to villages in small, unpressurized aircraft. This is a (Full-Time/Part-Time/TDY/Call-In) position. Attendance in accordance with the BBAHC Attendance policy is a job requirement.
