Job:

Associate Director of Advising, Beyond BarnardReporting to the Director, Advising and Programs, the Associate Director serves as a front-line career advisor for students and alumnae, building expertise in job documents, interview best practices, career exploration, and other topics. In collaboration with the Associate Director of Programs, the Associate Director of Advising provides direct supervision for Beyond Barnard’s Peer Career Advising program. Under the guidance of the Director, the Associate Director provides oversight of all advising efforts, including mentorship initiatives that connect alumnae to students (and to each other). The Associate Director of Advising is Beyond Barnard’s leader on general career best practices, and the team’s go-to resource for insights about current trends related to career advising. In addition, the individual in this role will develop and present programs across career advising and educational topics.

Job Description:

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct individual advising with students and alumnae on all topics covered by Beyond Barnard; maintain (and share across the entire Beyond Barnard team) a deep understanding of best practices related to advising for students and alumnae across all career stages.
  • Hire, train, and co-manage (in collaboration with the Associate Director of Programs), a team of Peer Career Advisors (PCAs).
  • Recruit candidates across majors, professional interests, and cohorts.
  • Manage all aspects of the hiring process, including screening and interviewing.
  • Design training schedule and materials, identify full-time staff to lead individual training sessions.
  • Co-lead weekly PCA team staff meetings; incorporate ongoing training opportunities.
  • Oversee performance reviews with PCAs (including observation of PCA advising appointments).
  • Lead performance improvement process for PCAs as required.
  • Plan professional development opportunities for PCAs.
  • Provide leadership for Beyond Barnard’s mentorship and alumnae advising initiatives, including the College’s virtual mentorship platform, Alumnae Ambassadors, etc. Collaborate with cross-campus partners in Advancement and other areas as appropriate.
  • Contribute to Beyond Barnard’s programming series, including: researching potential speakers and conducting outreach to them, coordinating logistics with speakers and campus partners, connecting with employers and/or graduate programs regarding recruitment initiatives and participation in Beyond Barnard events, delivering content in workshops and information sessions, moderating panels, and advertising event details to prospective participants.
  • Assist with all major Beyond Barnard and Division of Community Engagement & Lifelong Success events.
  • Develop, implement, and manage best practices around integration of new and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence into advising, programming, and administrative practices at Beyond Barnard; collaborate where possible with cross-campus technology advisory groups to identify opportunities to leverage these technologies in support career well-being work.
  • Represent the College and Beyond Barnard to internal stakeholders and at specified regional professional association conferences and professional development workshops.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Exceptional knowledge of advising best practices in a dynamic liberal arts college community.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking/presentation.

  • Facility with current technology and web-based applications.

  • Ability to focus and work quickly, to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and absorb detail.

  • Ability to understand and adhere to college and national policy and to decipher between confidential and need-to-know information.

  • Ability to build and cultivate relationships with diverse on- and off-campus stakeholders, including students, alumnae, parents, staff members, faculty members, representatives of graduate programs, and employers.

  • Maturity, sensitivity, tact, judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Ability to contribute to the tone of professionalism in the office and to remain calm and flexible under pressure

  • Ability to work effectively both as an individual and in a fast-paced and evolving setting that requires extensive cooperation and collaboration among all staff members.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • 3-5 years of related experience that includes demonstrated experience in advising college students and graduates on career development and preparation for graduate and professional education as well as programming experience.

  • Experience supervising student workers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree preferred.

  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative assessment of program effectiveness.

This job is currently a hybrid position, but may require a presence in the office up to five times a week depending on operational needs.

Salary Range: $78,000 - $83,000 annually

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
