Department 498 (D498), COLUMBIA Weapons & Mechanical Systems, is responsible for the COLUMBIA Class HM&E (Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical) Mechanical design products. D498 engineers work as a team with D453 Mechanical Design to complete COLUMBIA Class Rev A design disclosures and COLUMBIA Class Design Changes. D498 engineers also work with vendors through the review and disposition of VIR’s (Vendor Information Requests) providing technical oversight of suppliers building products on our design disclosures and resolving technical problems with COLUMBIA Class design products while also performing calculations to support these products.

Role Overview

As a D498 Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the design of Columbia Class HM&E Mechanical Systems, Hull Valves and Standard Valves, and supporting procurement of material for these systems and installation and test on the ship. As an experienced engineer, you will be expected to mentor new engineers, provide technical oversight and interface with engineers from all engineering disciplines, designers, shipbuilders, trades, suppliers, Navy Labs and NAVSEA customer personnel.

Key Responsibilities

D498 is seeking an engineer experienced with valve design and manufacturing to produce Columbia Hull and Standard Valve technical products and resolve construction problems and provide technical oversight for these products and problem resolution. The specific duties of this position will include:

  • Developing technical solutions to valve problems with vendors and in the shipyard
  • Reviewing and dis-positioning Change Notices (CN’s) and Vendor Information Requests (VIR’s)
  • Providing strong technical guidance to other engineers for resolution of valve design and shipyard construction problems
  • Peer review technical correspondence, including CN’s and VIR’s
  • Working with Mechanical Design to develop solutions to valve design problems
  • Developing and reviewing calculations supporting resolution of design or construction problems

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
  • 5+ years of post-graduate engineering experience in a professional setting
  • Previous experience with valves and fluid system design

Preferred

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering, or Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering
  • Experience performing mechanical shock analysis on ship systems and components
  • Experience developing designs of submarine mechanical components and systems
  • Experience reading and interpreting mechanical drawings
  • Experience designing mechanical systems/components for seawater exposure/immersion
  • Experience using Mathcad to perform calculations
  • Experience using Teamcenter
