Position Description

Middleton Place National Historic Landmark-

Middleton Place is America’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens and home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Located along the Ashley River in Charleston, Middleton Place is a National Historic Landmark, Historic Home, Research Center, and Historic Plantation and Stableyards.

Position Summary-Gardener

The horticulture team at this National Historic Landmark is responsible for general garden maintenance. The people who work in this department have a passion for plants and landscaping with hands-on experience in garden maintenance.

Reports to: Vice President of Horticulture FLSA Status: Full Time Non-Exempt

Qualifications

• Experience requirements-1-year experience working in the horticulture field
• Other required skills-Previous experience working safely with all types of landscaping and gardening equipment
• Effective work habits including time management, teamwork, and a proactive mindset
• Formal horticulture training or certification is a plus
• Knowledge of plant species, soil types, pest control
• Good communication skills and customer-focused attitude

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

• Working outdoors in all weather conditions; including heat, rain, cold, and humidity.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend and kneel with an ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Work involves exposure to tools, machinery, chemicals and outdoor elements including dirt, pollen and insects

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

• Garden Maintenance-perform tasks including mowing, planting, weeding, watering, fertilizing, mulching and pruning to ensure gardens are healthy and well-maintained
• Plant Care
• Equipment Maintenance-maintain equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition, operate machinery safely and efficiently
