About This Position

POSITION TITLE:

DIRECTOR OF NURSING

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Nursing is responsible for ensuring quality patient care provided by the nursing departments at Brightwell. This role oversees clinical care through collaboration with the nursing leadership team and ensures compliance with all accrediting agency standards governing patient care. The Director of Nursing facilitates coordination between clinical departments and the medical staff, participates in administrative committee activities, and ensures a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Additionally, the Director of Nursing is responsible for overseeing Performance Improvement activities facility-wide to maintain and improve the standards of patient care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing preferred
  • Minimum three years managerial or director level experience overseeing a psychiatric unit
  • Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in the state of MI.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of management and leadership principles.
  • Demonstrated understanding of healthcare delivery systems and their impact on nursing practice.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Performance Improvement Planning.

AGE OF PATIENTS SERVED AND AGE-SPECIFIC TECHNOLOGY:

  • Adult Population: Age 18 and up.
  • Sufficient knowledge of Growth and Development principles to interact with various age groups and adapt communication and interventions accordingly.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties listed below represent the general nature and level of work performed by the Director of Nursing. This list is not intended to be an exhaustive set of responsibilities, as additional tasks may be assigned by the CEO or CNO to meet the needs of Brightwell.

  • Provide direction for nursing services and supervise nursing functions.
  • Organize, plan, and direct department functions to comply with policies and achieve long- and short-term objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with ANA standards of psychiatric mental health nursing practices and AHA standards of practice.
  • Conduct regular rounds to assess and evaluate patient care quality unidentified or problems.
  • Ensure a work environment conducive to delivering optimal patient care.
  • Emphasize safety, patient rights, and person-centered planning in all aspects of care.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other administrative staff.
  • Approve all nursing department policies and procedures.
  • Delegate duties to Nursing Management and Administrative Personnel as needed.
  • Ensure performance appraisals are completed for Nursing leadership
  • Serve on Brightwell committees as required.
  • Participate in staff development and the recruitment and retention of qualified nursing staff in collaboration with the Human Resources Department.
  • Facilitate collaboration between clinical services, departments, and Medical Staff to deliver quality patient care.
  • Use a problem-solving approach to address issues with nursing services, clinical services, and the Medical Staff.
  • Review and approve departmental overtime based on staffing needs.
  • Participate in the budgeting process for the Nursing Department.
  • Promote harmonious relationships and positive attitudes within clinical services and Medical Staff.
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring annual clinical budgets in collaboration with the CNO.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary project planning.
  • Attend and chair administrative meetings as necessary.
  • Serve as a consultant and role model for clinical personnel.
  • Represent Brightwell Behavioral in community activities and educational programs to ensure quality nursing education.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the CEO or CNO, including assisting Nurse Managers, Charge Nurses, and other staff as needed.
