The Prep Cook at Palm House is responsible for assisting in the preparation of ingredients and supporting kitchen operations to ensure the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. This role is vital in maintaining a well-organized kitchen and delivering exceptional dining experiences through precise and timely preparation of food items.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation
- Prepare ingredients by chopping, slicing, dicing, and portioning vegetables, fruits, meats, and other items according to recipe specifications.
- Assist in the assembly and preparation of meals for service.
- Ensure all prep work is completed efficiently, accurately, and in alignment with Palm House culinary standards.
Stocking & Inventory Management
- Maintain an organized and well-stocked workstation, ensuring all ingredients and supplies are readily available.
- Store food products correctly, ensuring proper temperature control to maintain freshness and prevent contamination.
- Monitor stock levels and communicate shortages or supply needs to the kitchen manager or chef.
Food Safety & Hygiene
- Adhere to all food safety regulations, hygiene standards, and proper handling practices.
- Maintain cleanliness of work areas, utensils, and kitchen tools.
- Follow safety guidelines for kitchen equipment and report any malfunctions promptly.
Equipment Operation & Maintenance
- Operate and maintain kitchen equipment such as food processors, mixers, knives, and peelers safely and efficiently.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are properly cleaned and sanitized after use.
- Report any damaged or malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor.
Assisting with Menu Preparation
- Support chefs in preparing sauces, stocks, garnishes, and other components of menu items.
- Assist with plating and presentation during service as needed.
Collaboration & Teamwork
- Work closely with kitchen staff to ensure smooth operations and timely food preparation.
- Follow instructions from chefs and senior staff while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Foster a positive, cooperative, and professional team environment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Previous experience as a prep cook or kitchen assistant preferred but not required.
- Basic knowledge of food preparation techniques and kitchen procedures is advantageous.
- Strong knife skills and safe handling of kitchen tools and equipment.
- Good time management, attention to detail, and ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
- Eagerness to learn, adapt, and grow in a professional culinary setting.
Physical Requirements & Stamina
- Ability to stand, walk, and work for extended periods.
- Capable of lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds (e.g., ingredients, boxes of supplies).
- Ability to bend, kneel, squat, and reach as necessary for prep duties.
- Manual dexterity to handle knives, tools, and equipment safely and effectively.
- Physical stamina to perform repetitive tasks and work long shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
