About This Position

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Vice President of Clinical Ancillary Services, functions as the Director of Pharmacy Services including inpatient; remote locations, ambulatory clinics, clinical pharmacy services and retail outpatient services. Provides administrative support and direction to the department, ensuring the department is compliant with all appropriate regulatory guidelines.

Job Responsibilities

    1. Develops policies and procedures that prompt the safe, effective and appropriate use of medications in the hospital.
    2. Incorporates the provision of pharmaceutical care services into the overall function of the hospital including coordinating pharmacy services with other departments.
    3. Time Management and Organization of Tasks: Demonstrates organization in performing several tasks simultaneously. Shows willingness to move from one task to another as the work requires without being asked. Productively utilizes time to operate department in the most efficient manner possible, keeping in mind time constraints and capabilities of senior and highly experienced staff members. Prioritizes tasks and responsibilities.
    4. Develops and submits an operational budget that includes projected revenues and expenses, staffing requirements, space requirements, and capital/minor equipment needs.
    5. Develops and review job descriptions for the Pharmacy Department’s operational personnel.
    6. Responsible for review and approval of all operations, pharmacy policies and procedures on an as needed basis, but not less than triennially.
    7. Provide guidelines and approved procedures to preparing and labeling parenterals whenever these functions are not performed under direct pharmacy supervision.
    8. Provides for orientation and education of all personnel involved in the preparation of sterile parenteral medications and solutions.
    9. Maintains and keeps available the medical staff approved stock of antidotes and other emergency drugs in the pharmacy and in patient care areas. Maintains an adequate drug supply.
    10. Maintains records of transactions as required by law and as necessary to maintain control and accountability of all drugs.
    11. Provides, requires and documents the participation of pharmacy personnel in continuing education programs including: Orientation of new employees; annual safety review and other In-service programs.
    12. Administrative: Ensures personnel timecards accurately and completely. Accommodates schedule adjustments based on the needs of the department workflow. Directs operational department meetings.
    13. Contributes to the development and updating of the hospital medication formulary under the System Pharmacy and Therapeutics review/approval.
    14. Oversees communication new product information to nursing staff and other personnel.
    15. Cooperates in promoting student fellow and student extern programs.
    16. Supervises drug storage and preparation areas within the pharmacy and throughout the hospital.
    17. Assigns pharmacy staff members to monthly inspections of all pharmacy controlled medication storage areas (inpatient pharmacy, hospital-owned retail pharmacy, automated dispensing cabinets or ADC, remote location ADC, etc.).
    18. Designates authorized storage areas for outdated or otherwise unusable drugs prior to their disposition.
    19. Ensures that the Pharmacy Department’s operational areas are adequately staffed at all times to provide maximal patient care while still preserving efficiency of operation.
    20. Responsible for the hiring, orientation, disciplinary action of personnel.
    21. Functions as a Staff Pharmacist when necessary; provides pharmaceutical care services to patients of all ages.
    22. Participates in electronic health system optimization, as applicable to operations activity.
    23. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements as they relate to the function of pharmacy services including but not limited to the Board of Pharmacy, Drug Enforcement Agency, Joint Commission, Board of Health and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
    24. Participates in hospital department meetings as necessary.
    25. Ensures development, implementation and ongoing audits to review the accuracy of department billing practices. Staff is trained regarding billing practices in which they are involved and the training is documented.
  • Performs nutritional assessments on patient to determine nutritional status and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Interviews patients to obtain information regarding the patient’s nutritional status.
  • Reviews doctor’s orders for dietary requirements and modified diets for patients.

Education/Experience

  • Must hold a current and valid registration as a Pharmacist in the State of Indiana, having attained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy of Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (preferred) from an accredited school.
  • Must have completed a minimum of 5 years of Institutional pharmacy experience as a registered Pharmacist.
  • Must have a through working knowledge of supervisory and human relations principles, normally attained through advanced academic training in management principles/residency or 1 year of progressively responsible hospital experience as a Clinical Staff Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager
