Position Summary

Under the direction of the Vice President of Clinical Ancillary Services, the Director of Pharmacy Services provides leadership and oversight for all pharmacy operations, including inpatient services, remote locations, ambulatory clinics, clinical pharmacy services, and retail outpatient pharmacy operations. This role is responsible for regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and the delivery of safe, effective, and patient‑centered pharmaceutical care across the health system.

Key Responsibilities Leadership & Operations
  • Provide administrative direction and operational oversight for all pharmacy services to ensure high‑quality, compliant, and efficient patient care.
  • Develop, implement, and review pharmacy policies and procedures to promote the safe, effective, and appropriate use of medications.
  • Integrate pharmaceutical care services into the overall hospital operations by collaborating with nursing, medical staff, and other departments.
  • Ensure pharmacy services remain adequately staffed to maximize patient care while maintaining operational efficiency.
  • Function as a Staff Pharmacist when needed, providing pharmaceutical care to patients of all ages.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and accrediting agency requirements, including but not limited to the Indiana Board of Pharmacy, DEA, Joint Commission, Board of Health, HRSA, and CMS.
  • Maintain approved stocks of antidotes, emergency drugs, and adequate medication supplies throughout the hospital and patient care areas.
  • Oversee proper drug storage, preparation, labeling, and disposition of outdated or unusable medications.
  • Maintain legally required records to ensure accountability and control of all medications, including controlled substances.
  • Assign and oversee monthly inspections of all controlled medication storage areas, including inpatient pharmacy, retail pharmacy, automated dispensing cabinets (ADC), and remote locations.
Clinical & Professional Practice
  • Contribute to the development and ongoing review of the hospital medication formulary through the System Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Oversee communication of new medication and product information to nursing and clinical staff.
  • Participate in electronic health record (EHR) optimization related to pharmacy operations.
  • Promote and support student intern, extern, and fellowship programs.
  • Ensure appropriate guidelines are in place for preparing and labeling parenteral medications, including when direct pharmacy supervision is not present.
Staff Development & Education
  • Recruit, hire, orient, evaluate, and manage pharmacy personnel, including disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Ensure staff participation in continuing education, including new‑hire orientation, annual safety training, and in‑service programs.
  • Provide education and competency oversight for personnel involved in sterile parenteral preparation.
Financial & Administrative Management
  • Develop and manage the department’s operational budget, including projected revenue, expenses, staffing, space, and capital equipment needs.
  • Ensure accurate and compliant billing practices; oversee staff training and documentation related to pharmacy billing.
  • Review and approve pharmacy policies and procedures at least triennially.
  • Ensure accurate timekeeping and staffing schedules aligned with departmental workflow needs.
  • Lead and facilitate pharmacy department meetings and participate in hospital meetings as required.
Nutritional & Clinical Support (as applicable)
  • Perform nutritional assessments and interviews to determine patient nutritional status when required.
  • Review physician orders related to dietary requirements and modified diets, making appropriate recommendations.
Education/Experience
  • Must hold a current and valid registration as a Pharmacist in the State of Indiana, having attained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (preferred) from an accredited school.
  • Must have completed a minimum of 5 years of Institutional pharmacy experience as a registered Pharmacist.
  • Must have a through working knowledge of supervisory and human relations principles, normally attained through advanced academic training in management principles/residency or 1 year of progressively responsible hospital experience as a Clinical Staff Pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager
  • 340B ACE Certification preferred
