About This Position
Assists with the day-to-day supervision of associates and routine operations for assigned section/shift. Participates in the preparation and updating of procedures and other department manuals and the development and implementation of quality control/assurance programs. Performs the duties of a Medical Laboratory Scientist as needed.

Assists with the day-to-day supervision of associates and routine operations for assigned area to ensure accurate results and efficient workflow by assisting management in:
- Setting departmental standards of quality, productivity, and performance and with developing and implementing monitoring systems.
- Scheduling associates and making work assignments according to operational requirements.
- Providing input into hiring, training, developing, and appraising associates and making recommendations as requested.
- Orienting and instructing designated associates in the performance of routine and standardized procedures.
- Serving as a resource person for associates on questions or concerns related to assigned section/shift.
- Participating in the preparation and updating of procedures and other departmental manuals and making recommendations to stay current with new technology and laboratory standards.
- Responds to internal and external customers' questions, concerns, problems, etc. following established policies and procedures.
- Investigating and addressing incidents involving patients, associates, clients or visitors and notifies supervisor as appropriate.
- Ensuring assigned area(s) meet state, federal, and other regulatory requirements.
- Participating in the development and implementation of quality control/assurance programs.
- Providing input and support for the development and implementation of improvements, including identifying opportunities, providing data and recommending solutions.
- Leading project teams and facilitating meetings as requested.
- Ensuring the proper and efficient use of supplies and equipment.
- Developing and maintaining a positive work climate and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
- Ensuring associates perform duties using safe work techniques and procedures in accordance with OSHA, State and Federal regulations and Hospital policies and procedures.
- Performing the Essential Functions of a Medical Laboratory Scientist as needed.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Participating on committees as requested.
- Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or in a chemical, physical or biological science and completion of a CAHEA-accredited Medical Laboratory Science program or as defined under CFR 493.1489 for high complexity testing and CFR.493.1423 for moderately complex testing personnel. Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by an appropriate accrediting agency i.e., ASCP, HEW/HHS or equivalent must be acquired within one year of hire. Three years of related medical laboratory experience with prior leadership experience preferred.
Selected Candidate Must
- Qualify as testing personnel for high complexity testing as defined in CFR.493.1489 and for moderately complex testing as defined in CFR 493. 1423..
- Qualify as a CLIA General Supervisor for high complexity testing as defined under CFR 493.1461 when assigned those duties.
- Qualify as a Technical Supervisor for high complexity testing as defined under CFR 493.1449 when assigned those duties.
- Qualify as a CLIA Technical Consultant for moderate complexity testing as defined under CFR.493.1411 when assigned those duties.
Knowledge & Skills
- Requires an in-depth knowledge of medical laboratory procedures and testing systems to perform laboratory tests, interpret test results, perform quality control checks and maintain instrumentation and skill in performing a full range of clinical laboratory tests.
- Requires working knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations and applicable accrediting agencies.
- Requires the organizational skills necessary to be effective in a fast paced, quality focused, multi-priority environment that frequently deals with stressful situations and deadlines.
- Demonstrates proficient computer skills and knowledge of laboratory information systems and applications.
- Demonstrates leadership, interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) necessary to guide associates in daily operations and to maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, other associates, and the public.
Working Conditions
- Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, chemicals and other conditions common to a hospital laboratory.
Physical Demands
- Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to stand for long periods of time, walk short distances, and lift up to 35 pounds) to perform the essential functions of the position. Also requires visual acuity, normal color perception, and full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
