Job Description

About the Role:

The Registered Nurse in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective recovery of patients following surgical procedures. This position requires vigilant monitoring of patients' vital signs, pain levels, and overall condition as they emerge from anesthesia, facilitating a smooth transition to the next phase of care. The nurse collaborates closely with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to promptly identify and address any complications or adverse reactions. Providing compassionate patient education and emotional support to patients and their families is also a key component of this role. Ultimately, the Registered Nurse in the PACU contributes significantly to patient safety, comfort, and positive surgical outcomes within a fast-paced clinical environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of New Jersey.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program
  • BLS and ACLS certification.
  • Prior experience or clinical exposure in a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit or critical care setting.
  • Strong knowledge of postoperative care principles and patient monitoring techniques.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in Post Anesthesia Nursing (CPAN) or equivalent specialty certification.
  • Experience working in a high-volume surgical center or hospital PACU.
  • Demonstrated skills in patient education and interdisciplinary teamwork.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor patients’ vital signs and level of consciousness continuously during the immediate postoperative period.
  • Assess and manage pain, nausea, and other postoperative symptoms using appropriate interventions and medications.
  • Collaborate with the surgical and anesthesia teams to communicate patient status and any concerns promptly.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of patient care, observations, and interventions in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding postoperative care, discharge instructions, and follow-up procedures.
  • Ensure the PACU environment is safe, clean, and well-equipped to meet patient needs.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies or changes in patient condition, initiating appropriate protocols as necessary.

Skills:

The required skills enable the nurse to perform continuous patient assessments, interpret vital signs, and administer medications safely and effectively in the PACU setting. Strong communication skills are essential for coordinating care with multidisciplinary teams and providing clear instructions to patients and families. Critical thinking and quick decision-making skills are used daily to identify and respond to changes in patient condition promptly. Preferred skills and specialty training enhance the nurse’s ability to manage complex postoperative complications and emergencies. Additionally, proficiency in electronic health records and documentation ensures accurate and timely recording of patient information, supporting quality care and compliance.
