About This Position

The Urgent Care Patient Care Technician (UC PCT) provides direct patient care for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in an urgent care setting under the supervision of a licensed nurse or provider. The UC PCT supports patient comfort, safety, and quality care delivery in a fast-paced environment, assisting with clinical procedures, patient education, and daily care needs.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  1. Patient Care & Support
  2. Assist with patient check-in and registration.
  3. Obtain and record vital signs, weight, and room patients across all age groups, including pediatric patients.
  4. Provide toileting assistance, dressing assistance, and mobility support as needed.
  5. Support pediatric patients by assisting with comfort measures, height/weight/head circumference measurement, and involving parents in care.
  6. Clinical Assistance
  7. Assist with minor procedures (e.g., wound care, suture setup, splinting assistance) under supervision.
  8. Perform EKGs, glucometers, laboratory specimen collection (venipuncture, capillary draws), and basic phlebotomy after competency validation.
  9. Ensure proper patient positioning for procedures and treatments, including pediatric support during exams.
  10. Monitor and promptly report changes in patient condition to the nurse or provider.
  11. Infection Control & Safety
  12. Adhere to infection control practices, universal precautions, and safety protocols.
  13. Maintain clean and stocked patient care areas to ensure a safe, efficient environment.
  14. Support emergency protocols in urgent situations.
  15. Education & Communication
  16. Assist with discharge instructions to ensure patient/family understanding of follow-up care.
  17. Answer patient inquiries within scope of practice, escalating as needed.
  18. Participate in ongoing training and competency assessments.
  19. Operational Responsibilities
  20. Respond quickly and effectively in a fast-paced urgent care environment.
  21. May work alternate shifts or on-call as scheduled; on-call employees must report within 30 minutes of notification.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned within scope of training, licensure, and hospital policy.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant program, one month of on-site training by qualified staff, or one semester of an approved LPN/RN program including clinical practice.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

Experience:

  • One month of direct care experience preferred.

Contacts:

  • Frequent contact with patients, families, providers, nurses, and hospital staff.

Physical Demands:

  • Stands and walks most of the day.
  • Requires moderate to heavy lifting and transporting of patients and equipment.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids, requiring strict adherence to safety and infection control protocols.
  • Fast-paced urgent care environment with diverse patient needs and acuity levels.
  • Must be able to work varying shifts, weekends, holidays, and occasional on-call assignments.
