Job Description

The Registered Professional Nurse is responsible for the planning, implementing and evaluation of care for a given patient population with the established standards and practices of Crouse Hospital. This process is enacted through direct clinical practice, management of patient care and general professional duties.

Specific Duties include:

1. Maintain competencies in all areas of the RN role in Prep/Recovery (PACU) to include:

a) Prep Area

b) Phase I Recovery Area

c) Phase II Recovery Area

2. Provides daily responsibility for chart and patient preparation in the preoperative and postoperative stages of surgery.

3. Maintains a continuing awareness of individual patient needs, both physical and emotional, and provide any necessary assistance and/or intervention to meet those needs.

4. Document all information relevant to the patient during the preoperative and postoperative phases in the patient care record.

5. Maintains knowledge of the physiological, patho-physiological and anatomical aspects of the post surgical patient assigned, related to performed surgical interventions.

6. Uses equipment correctly to perform patient monitoring, evaluation, and care interventions of the pre and post surgical patient.

7. Administers pre and post procedural medications in accordance to physician orders and hospital policy and procedures.

8. Demonstrates understanding of Crouse Hospital pain management policies by:

a) Effectively communicates/teaches the different pain scales.

b) Utilizes appropriate scale according to the patient needs and age.

c) Assess patients pain per policy and provide correct documentation, of post medication administration pain level, per policy.

9. Understands and participates in the use of the SBAR communication during hand-off.

10. Demonstrates accurate performance of all POC testing utilized in the department.

11. Provides all necessary patient care measures, as assigned, to include;

a) Intravenous Infusion Patients (Medications i.e. Remicaid, Reclast, IVIG)

b) Blood Product Transfusion Patients

c) Admission and Discharge of Phoresis and Photophoresis Patients

d) Cardiac Catheterization Patients

e) NORPA Patients

12. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor/unit manager or designee to include floating coverage to surgical service areas as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Required: Graduate of an accredited Nursing Degree program. Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State. Minimum of one (1) year Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) or critical care Registered Nurse experience required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at time of hire or within 6 weeks after hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification must be obtained within six (6) months of the hire date, if deemed necessary for the position based on the scope of the assigned role. .

Preferred: Certification in specialty area (ASPAN) desirable.

IF HIRED OR LICENSED AFTER 1/1/2017: MUST complete BSN (Bachelors in Nursing) within 8 years of hire date into the Registered Nurse position.
