About This Position
DEPARTMENT SUMMARY
Under the supervision of laboratory testing personnel, performs pre-analytical processing tasks, waived/low complexity testing, loading of specimens on testing instrumentation, processing of bone marrow specimens, and other duties as assigned.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The purpose of this position is to support laboratory testing personnel by processing and handling specimens following hospital and laboratory policies and procedures to ensure specimen quality is maintained and specimen testing is performed in a timely manner. This individual will also attend bone marrow procedures and process bone marrow specimens in a manner that ensures the pathology department is provided with the highest quality specimen possible.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Graduate or equivalent
- Associates or bachelor’s degree in a science or health related field preferred
- Previous laboratory experience preferred
RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
- Process and handle bone marrow specimens, including slide making in the procedure room
- Perform waived/low complexity testing such as pregnancy tests, occult bloods, and urine dipsticks
- Processes specimen to ensure the integrity of the sample prior to testing. Distributes specimens to the appropriate testing area.
- Perform accurate patient and insurance data entry into Medipac
- Order lab work from OPD, ALS and CareEvolve requisitions
- Load the automated track according to established guidelines
- Centrifuge and separate specimens according to test requirements
- Monitor and empty tube system punctually; checking for stats and prioritizing work
- Complies with organizational policies, procedures, and code of conduct.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work eight hours a day. This unit requires has 24/7 coverage.
- Shifts are variable to volume of department. Rotation as needed.
- Work weekends and holidays as assigned.
- Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate floor coverage.
