Overview
A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse responsible for delivering safe, high-quality anesthesia care before, during, and after surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. CRNAs work collaboratively with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and interdisciplinary teams to support optimal patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-operative Care
-
Assess medical history, risk factors, and anesthesia needs.
Educate patients and families on anesthesia options and expectations.
Develop individualized anesthesia plans.

Administer general, regional, or monitored anesthesia.
Monitor vital signs and adjust anesthetic levels appropriately.
Manage airway and respond to emergent changes in patient status.

Manage emergence and recovery from anesthesia.
Provide postoperative pain and nausea management.
Complete safe transfer of care.

Maintain accurate documentation.
Participate in quality and safety initiatives.
Check and maintain anesthesia equipment integrity.
Provide sedation/anesthesia for non-OR procedures where appropriate.

Deliver safe and effective anesthesia care across various patient populations.
Perform airway management and vascular access procedures.
Interpret physiologic data in real time and respond to emergencies.
Communicate clearly with patients and clinical staff.
Utilize and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment safely.
Uphold ethical, regulatory, and professional standards of advanced practice.

Active RN license in the state of practice.
Active APRN license or equivalent state recognition.
National CRNA certification through NBCRNA.
Current ACLS and BLS certifications; PALS as required by facility.

Graduation from an accredited CRNA program (master’s or doctoral level).
ICU or high-acuity RN experience prior to CRNA training (as required by program).
New graduates considered; prior CRNA experience preferred for certain roles.
Experience in regional anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, or trauma care may be required for specialized positions.

1–3 years of independent CRNA practice in a hospital or ambulatory surgery setting.
Experience with advanced regional anesthesia, including ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve blocks.
Experience in high-acuity areas such as trauma, cardiac, or obstetrics.
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or DNAP degree.
Prior involvement in quality improvement, patient safety programs, or clinical committees.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in autonomous and collaborative practice models.
Experience with electronic anesthesia record systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner).
Strong record of professional communication, teamwork, and patient-centered care.
Certification or specialized training in difficult airway management or acute pain management, if applicable.

Ability to stand or sit for long procedures.
Manual dexterity for airway, IV, and regional techniques.
Adequate visual and auditory acuity for patient and equipment monitoring.
Ability to move quickly in emergencies.
Ability to lift or move equipment (typically 20–30 lbs; adjust per facility).
Ability to assist with patient positioning when necessary.

Ability to remain composed during high-stress or emergent situations.
