| Job Summary | At the College of Design, our Design Technology Specialists are vital in providing technical, operational, and occasional administrative support for our fabrication lab services and facilities. Reporting directly to the Fabrication Lab Manager, the Wood Lab Technician will oversee and manage the woodshop resources, ensuring their optimal functionality and availability for the college community. This role requires a blend of technical expertise in woodworking, a commitment to safety, and an ability to educate and support a diverse group of users. *You are required to submit a resume. Optional documents that may be included are a cover letter. A Portfolio of work demonstrating woods experience may also be included in “Specific Request 1”. Key Responsibilities: Resource Coordination: Manage daily operations of woodshop resources. Prepare and maintain facilities for faculty and student use, provide orientations, and demonstrate woodworking techniques. Equipment Operation: Demonstrate and monitor the safe and correct use of all woodworking equipment, including specialized machinery like lathes. Safety and Compliance: Foster a culture of strict safety compliance and excellent customer service. Conduct safety orientations and training sessions regularly. Technical Support: Offer hands-on support to faculty and students of varying skill levels with design technology tools and equipment. Escalate complex issues to the FabLab Manager. Operational Support: Manage the check-out and return of design materials and tools, and track material availability. Educational Support: Work directly with students in an educational setting to facilitate learning and ensure a supportive environment. Maintenance and Monitoring: Regularly inspect and maintain FabLab facilities, equipment, and tools to ensure they are in good working condition. Collaboration and Training: Work closely with the Fabrication Lab Manager to create a collaborative environment. Train student staff on best practices and ensure all users are qualified and properly oriented. Record Keeping: Assist in maintaining accurate and comprehensive records of equipment usage, trained users, and lab operations. |
| Skills / Knowledge / Abilities | Experience: At least 1 year of professional experience in wood fabrication, including proficiency with woodworking machines and tools. Technical Skills: Knowledge of CAD and vector-based design software such as Illustrator, Rhino, AutoCAD is highly desirable. Education: An undergraduate degree in Architecture, Design, Art, or a closely related field is preferred. Skills: Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to instruct and work effectively with diverse populations. |
