Server:

His or her primary duty is to provide good customer service, take orders, and deliver food. Servers are expected to answer questions regarding the menu. They work closely with other wait staff and the kitchen to ensure the restaurant is operated efficiently.

Servers are a part of the dining experience, offering suggestions and recommendations, such as wine and beer pairings. They help to personalize the meal.

Servers may need to meet with kitchen staff or managers daily prior to service to discuss that day's offerings. Topics in these meetings may include specials, food preparation, and ingredients used, especially if they may be a potential allergen to some diners. Additional duties of a restaurant server may also include:

• Processing payment
• Greeting customers
• Cleaning tables and dining area
• Setting tables
• Check patrons' identification in order to ensure that they meet minimum age requirements for consumption of alcoholic beverages.
• Check with customers to ensure that they are enjoying their meals and take action to correct any problems.
• Explain how various menu items are prepared, describing ingredients and cooking methods.
• Inform customers of daily specials.
• Prepare checks that itemize and total meal costs and sales taxes.
• Present menus to patrons and answer questions about menu items, making recommendations upon request.
• Remove dishes and glasses from tables or counters, and take them to kitchen for cleaning.
• Serve food and/or beverages to patrons; prepare and serve specialty dishes at tables as required.
• Stock service areas with supplies such as coffee, food, tableware, and linens.
