About This Position

Position Summary

Reporting to the Biomedical Manager, the Biomedical Equipment Technician I (BMET I) is responsible for maintaining clinical equipment by effectively utilizing the Medical Equipment Management System. This role involves performing routine tasks related to the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of a limited range of biomedical equipment. Under the supervision and guidance of an experienced technician, the BMET I gains hands-on experience while developing technical skills.

General Guidelines: This is an entry-level position requiring a basic understanding of biomedical equipment maintenance. The BMET I demonstrates foundational knowledge of job functions but requires supervision or mentoring for more advanced tasks.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited Biomedical Program; OR Associate degree or equivalent two-year vocational training in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics, or other related field; OR military training in biomedical equipment technology; OR two years of prior experience in biomedical equipment technology, information technology, electronics, maintenance, engineering, or other related field without education.
  • Basic understanding and skills related to general technology concepts and/or biomedical systems and devices.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics, anatomy, physiology, biology, physics, chemistry, medical terminology, English, computer and networking peripherals, and professional skills.
  • Valid Kansas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, insurable through the hospital’s insurance carrier.
  • Additional certification may be required for certain settings or populations; Specific information and the timeframe in which such certification must be attained will be provided by the department manager at the time of hire/transfer into the department.

Preferred:

  • Military training.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics.
  • Basic understanding of clinical equipment and radiological, laboratory, and network medical systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and basic repairs on medical equipment.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues with biomedical devices.
  • Calibrate and test medical equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Document maintenance activities, repairs, and test results in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Follow safety procedures and guidelines when handling and servicing medical devices.
  • Assist in inventory management and tracking of biomedical equipment.
  • Work under supervision to gain hands-on experience with more complex biomedical systems.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure proper use and care of equipment.
  • Ensure safe driving techniques when operating department vehicles under adverse weather conditions; strategically maneuver vehicles through heavy traffic, difficult loading dock entries, and other obstacles; load and unload vehicles, complete daily vehicle maintenance, and address minor maintenance issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

HIPAA: This position will have access to the following Protected Health Information in order to carry out the duties related to their position at Hays Medical Center based on the following criteria:

  • Primary – required (routine) to do the job;
  • Secondary – required for the job, but mostly by exception; and
  • None – no approved access

  • Secondary:
    • Patient Demographic Information (information used to identify a person): Name, Date of Birth, Address, Race, Marital Status, Religion
    • Clinical Information (information that describes a patient’s health status): Diagnosis, Reports/Medical Notes, Test Results, Problem List, Procedures, History and Physical
    • Coding Information (clinical information that is in (alpha) numeric format): ICD-9 Codes, Rev Codes, CPT Codes
    • Financial Information/Insurance (information related to insurance, billing, and payment): Billing Information, Payer Name, Payer ID, Account Balances, Plan Elements Covered, Payment Information, Payment Rates

Infection Control: This position will include initial and ongoing training in dealing with infection control. Training could include but is not limited to blood-borne pathogens, bodily fluids, and biohazardous materials as it applies to your daily work environment.
