Position Purpose:
The Coach is embedded in a single school community to ensure that a college focus and access to critical opportunities and milestones necessary for post-secondary success are available to all students. As an Onward representative in the cohort school, Coaches provide individualized, relationship-driven support to students and families, guiding them through Onward’s programs and college readiness journey. The Coach uses data and CRM systems to monitor student outcomes, identify trends, and tailor support for priority students, while collaborating with internal teams and school partners to coordinate services. Through proactive outreach and strong relationship-building, they help students stay on track toward college readiness, access, and success. Beyond supporting individual students, this role works with the entire school team (administration, guidance team, teachers) to embed college readiness and access opportunities throughout the school. They also operate and/or support” out of school “Onward Programs for that school community.
Role Responsibilities:
Student Coaching and Support:
- Serve as the primary Onward We Learn representative embedded within a school community, ensuring all students have access to college readiness supports, opportunities, and key milestones for postsecondary success.
- Act as a key point of contact for all students within the assigned school engaging with Onward services.
- Provide guidance through Onward program/services with a scheduled cadence of meetings/check-ins with students based on tier position.
- Assist students in setting realistic academic and personal goals, developing actionable plans with a strong emphasis on college access and awareness, and ensuring students meet critical college pathway milestones.
- Meet weekly and monthly outreach and engagement goals, ensuring broad and sustained student participation across all tiers.
- Collaborate with school-based teams to coordinate services, escalate needs, and align interventions for students requiring additional support.
- Support a continuum of engagement by helping students move from episodic participation to sustained, transformational involvement in Onward programming.
- Comply with all relevant school policies and legal requirements, such as mandatory reporting, to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
Data Use and Continuous Improvement:
- Master Onward’s CRM caseload management modules to maintain accurate and current records of all student and family interactions, including milestone completion, academic progress, services and interventions, and personal/college awareness development.
- Leverage CRM reports to regularly analyze student attendance, academic milestones, achievement of academic goals, and completion of college readiness activities to identify trends in student engagement and assess the effectiveness of programmatic strategies.
- Use data to identify priority students and trends, tailor interventions, and improve overall program effectiveness.
Integration and Impact:
- Seamlessly integrate into the school community as a valued member of their team. Build and maintain relationships with the school leadership and guidance team.
- Regularly communicate with school counselors and families to update them on student progress and program information.
- Be familiar with and leverage available community resources and partnerships for individual students or the community at large.
Programming:
- Work with the school administration, Director of Cohort Pathways, and Chief Program Officer to integrate a college-going culture into daily school experiences by coordinating in-school programming, awareness campaigns, and milestone-driven activities.
- Plan, manage, and facilitate all out-of-school-time programming for the assigned school community, including after-school programs, weekend sessions, and school break/summer opportunities.
Team Collaboration and Professional Development:
- Participate in departmental and other Program meetings to understand organization goals and how the coach role contributes to those objectives.
- Regularly collaborate with other departments within Onward We Learn to ensure a unified approach to student development and program delivery.
- Engage in regular professional development opportunities to stay current with secondary educational trends, student counseling, youth mentorship, and youth development best practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned, necessary to ensure the success of Onward We Learn and to serve our families and students
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in education, human services, or a related field.
- 2-3 years’ of relevant experience.
- Experience in a K-12 school.
- Ability to work independently and with a team.
- Exceptional written, oral, and presentation skills with the ability to effectively communicate with students, senior management, staff, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to take extensive notes and input data into CRM.
- Must be willing to maintain a flexible schedule, including weekend and evening hours.
- Expected to have reliable transportation and the ability to travel to their assigned cohort district. (Newport or Woonsocket)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and adaptability to new technology systems.
- Demonstrated commitment to Onward We Learn’s mission and vision.
Preferred
- Master's degree in education, human services, or a related field.
- Familiarity with the latest trends in the field of college access and success for first-generation students.
- Fluency in languages spoken by Onward We Learn’s students and families.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think outside the box to find solutions.
