Job Description
The Business Analyst supports the operational, financial, and strategic initiatives of the physician practice by transforming data into actionable insights. This role partners with clinical, operational, and revenue cycle leaders to analyze performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and support data-driven decision-making. A key responsibility is the creation, maintenance, and optimization of dashboards and reporting tools to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) across the organization. This position also supports special projects and organizational initiatives through coordination, tracking, communication, and reporting.
Responsibilities:
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data from EMR systems, practice management systems, and other data sources.
- Identify trends, variances, and opportunities related to patient flow, provider productivity, revenue cycle, and operational efficiency.
- Develop routine and ad hoc reports to support leadership decision-making.
- Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and consistency across reporting platforms and HIPAA compliance.
Dashboard Development & Management
- Design, build, and maintain interactive dashboards for clinical, operational, and financial performance.
- Establish standardized KPI dashboards for departments (e.g., patient access, clinical, optical, revenue cycle).
- Continuously update dashboards with current data and refine based on leadership feedback.
- Automate reporting processes where possible to improve efficiency and reduce manual work.
- Partner with leadership to define meaningful metrics and visualizations that align with organizational goals.
- Monitor dashboard performance and troubleshoot data or system issues.
Operational & Financial Support
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance analysis.
- Analyze key metrics such as patient volumes, payer mix, reimbursement trends, and provider productivity.
- Assist in identifying cost-saving opportunities and operational improvements.
- Support service line analysis (e.g., retina, cataract, LASIK, optical).
EMR & Systems Support
- Serve as a liaison between operations and IT for reporting needs within EMR and practice management systems.
- Assist in EMR optimization, data extraction, and reporting capabilities.
- Participate in system upgrades, implementations, and workflow improvements.
- Support compliance reporting (e.g., MIPS, regulatory requirements).
Project & Process Improvement
- Participate in cross-functional projects focused on operational improvement and growth initiatives.
- Map workflows and identify inefficiencies, recommending data-driven solutions.
- Track project metrics and provide reporting updates to leadership.
Special Project Coordination
- Coordinate and support special projects and strategic initiatives across the organization.
- Assist leadership with project planning, timelines, meeting coordination, and follow-up tracking.
- Develop project status reports, dashboards, and presentations for leadership review.
- Monitor project milestones, deliverables, and accountability measures.
- Collaborate with department leaders to gather information and ensure project progress remains on schedule.
Experience:
- 1-2 years of experience working in ophthalmology or specialty physician practice (preferred)
- Experience working with EMR/practice management systems (e.g., NextGen Healthcare) (preferred)
Education and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Finance, Data Analytics, or related field (preferred)
- Strong proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Excel dashboards)
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, data modeling)
- Familiarity with CMS quality programs (e.g., MIPS)
- Familiarity with SQL, data warehousing, or automation tools
- Knowledge of healthcare KPIs, revenue cycle metrics, and payer dynamics
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
- Excellent communication skills with both clinical and non-clinical stakeholders
