Job Description
Job Title: Retail Journeyman Installer
Department: Installation
Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Early
morning meetings, overtime, evenings, and weekends may be required based on
business needs.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Scale: $35.00 – $48.00 per hour, depending on experience
Position Summary: The Retail Journeyman Installer is responsible for the installation of
residential heating and air conditioning systems, ductwork, and associated
accessories in retrofit and replacement applications. This role ensures all work is
completed to company standards, code requirements, and manufacturer
specifications while delivering a high-quality customer experience.
This position also supports the installation team by training and mentoring
apprentices and helpers, ensuring jobsite efficiency, safety compliance, and
professional execution from start to finish.
Reports To: Operations Manager
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years of residential HVAC installation experience
- Valid driver's license with an insurable driving record
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, components, and installation practices
- EPA Type II Refrigerant Handling Certification or Universal EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification
- Ability to properly install, set, and start up residential HVAC systems
- Strong understanding of electrical fundamentals including line voltage, low voltage, relays, transformers, and wiring diagrams
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical plans, and installation diagrams
- Ability to install, braze, pressure test, and evacuate refrigeration line sets
- Ability to properly install, seal, and insulate duct systems
- Working knowledge of local and state mechanical codes
- Ability to safely operate tools, ladders, lifts, and jobsite equipment
- Experience training and supporting apprentices
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and jobsite cleanliness
- Willingness to attend training and continuing education
- Ability to obtain or maintain NATE certification
- Must provide basic hand tools required for installation work

Key Responsibilities:
Installation & Retrofit Execution
- Install residential and light commercial HVAC systems including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, and accessories
- Set and connect air handlers, furnaces, condensers, and related equipment per code
- Install refrigeration line sets, braze connections, evacuate systems, and perform startup procedures
- Install ductwork including rectangular, round, flex duct, fittings, and transitions
- Install and terminate PVC drain lines, flues, and ventilation systems
- Install and wire low voltage and control systems
- Perform system startup, testing, and basic troubleshooting
Jobsite Leadership & Training
- Lead and support installation helpers and apprentices in daily tasks
- Train team members on installation standards, safety practices, and workflow processes
- Ensure jobsite efficiency, cleanliness, and professionalism
- Support a culture of accountability and craftsmanship on every project
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
- Conduct jobsite safety assessments before beginning work.
- Use ladders, lifts, and tools safely at all times
- Ensure proper use of PPE and safety equipment daily
- Maintain a clean, organized service vehicle.
- Complete all required safety documentation.
Customer Experience
- Maintain professional communication and appearance at all times
- Respect customer property and ensure clean, organized jobsite conditions
- Address customer questions professionally and escalate concerns when needed
- Contribute to positive customer experience and online reviews
Documentation & Operations
- Complete all required paperwork, checklists, and installation documentation
- Accurately track timecards, job notes, and materials usage
- Work within company software systems (ServiceTitan or equivalent workflow tools)
- Communicate job progress and issues with operations team
- Pick up and manage materials, parts, and equipment from warehouse or jobsite deliveries
Other Duties
- Attend company and department meetings and required training sessions
- Participate in vehicle inspections and tool accountability processes
- Perform other duties as assigned.

1. Installation Quality & Recall Rate
Description: Measures quality of installation work and reduction of post-installation issues requiring return visits.
- Target: ≤ 3% installation-related callback rate
- Measured By: Recall and warranty tracking reports
2. Job Efficiency (Bid vs. Actual Hours)
Description: Measures ability to complete installation work within estimated labor hours.
- Target: ≥ 90% of jobs completed within bid labor hours
- Measured By: Job costing and labor tracking reports
3. Jobsite Readiness & Execution
Description: Ensures installations are completed with proper preparation, materials, and workflow execution.
- Target: ≥ 95% of jobs completed without missing materials or delays due to install readiness
- Measured By: Supervisor audits and job completion reports
4. Safety Compliance
Description: Maintains a safe jobsite environment and adheres to all safety procedures.

Description: Ensures all installation paperwork, checklists, and system documentation are completed accurately and on time.

Description: Delivers a professional customer experience through communication, technical ability, cleanliness, and follow-through.

Physical Demands:
This position regularly requires walking, standing, climbing ladders, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling equipment and materials. Employees must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and maneuver heavier materials with assistance or proper equipment. Technicians regularly work in attics, crawlspaces, rooftops, confined spaces, and uneven terrain while utilizing ladders, power tools, testing equipment, and HVAC service instruments.
Work Environment:
This role operates in residential homes, commercial buildings, construction sites, rooftops, attics, crawlspaces, and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow, and smoke conditions common to the region. Employees may be exposed to dust, electrical systems, refrigerants, mechanical equipment, and loud noise levels. Driving between job sites and extended periods
