Job Description

JOB TITLE: Assembler Mechanical

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt

EMPLOYER: SMS group

DEPARTMENT: Operations

REPORTS TO: Operations Manager

EFFECTIVE DATE: 12/16/2025

SUMMARY: The Assembler Mechanical role is a safety minded worker, who is an analytical thinker, with experience in a maintenance or mechanical role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repair and maintain the operating condition of industrial production or processing machinery or equipment.
  • Repair/ replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery or equipment.
  • Disassemble machinery or equipment to remove parts and make repairs.
  • Observe and test the operation of machinery or equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using voltmeters or other testing devices.
  • Reassembling equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  • Clean, lubricate, or adjust parts, equipment, or machinery.
  • Examine parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear.
  • Operate newly repaired machinery or equipment to verify the adequacy of repairs.
  • Analyze test results, machine error messages, or information obtained from operators to diagnose equipment problems.
  • Record parts or materials used and order or requisition new parts or materials, as necessary.
  • Record repairs and maintenance performed.
  • Study blueprints or manufacturers' manuals to determine correct installation or operation of machinery.
  • Cut and weld metal to repair broken metal parts, fabricate new parts, or assemble new equipment.
  • Enter codes and instructions to program computer-controlled machinery.
  • Demonstrate equipment functions and features to machine operators.
  • Safely operate cranes, & forklifts for loading and unloading equipment.
  • Electrical troubleshooting

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ mechanical work experience
  • Electrical troubleshooting experience
  • Safety focused mind

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate forklifts and cranes

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Occasionally required to stand.

  • Continually required to talk or hear.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions (non-weather).
  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasionally works around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals.
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Occasionally exposed to extreme heat or cold (non-weather).
  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Additional remarks regarding work environment:
    • Shop floor is not heat/AC controlled
  • Specialized equipment, machines, or vehicles used: Able to drive a forklift, operate cranes, and ability to drive a semi is a plus.
