Food Service Shift Supervisor in Newport, Rhode Island at The Preservation Society of Newport County/Newport Mansions

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

The Food Service Shift Supervisor supports the daily operation of The Breakers Café, ensuring excellent customer service, efficient operations, and compliance with health, safety, and sanitation standards. Working closely with the Museum Café Operations Manager, this hands-on role performs opening and closing procedures, assists with inventory and food orders, maintains a clean and well-stocked café environment, and serves as a lead point of contact for guests and Food Service Associates.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

· Open and/or close the café, including cash register preparation and reconciliation, food and beverage setup, and completion of end-of-day procedures.

· In the Museum Café Operations Manager’s absence, act as a main point of contact for Food Service Associates.

· Receive and inspect food deliveries, monitor and record food storage temperatures, and ensure compliance with food safety standards.

· Place daily food orders and maintain appropriate stock levels of food, beverage, and service items.

· Deliver exceptional customer service by responding professionally to guest inquiries, concerns, and complaints, and resolving issues in a timely manner.

· Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment by ensuring compliance with housekeeping, sanitation, health, safety, and customer service standards.

· Monitor café operations and inventory to ensure products and supplies are adequately stocked and available for guests.

· Coordinate with catering and event staff at other museum café locations (e.g., The Chinese Tea House and The Elms Carriage House Café) to support efficient operations and high-quality guest experiences.

· Support special events as needed, including opening and closing facilities and welcoming guests at The Elms Carriage House.

QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIREMENTS)

· High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

· Prior customer service, food service, retail, or cash-handling experience preferred.

· Prior supervisory experience preferred but not required.

· Ability to provide exceptional customer service and interact professionally with guests in a fast-paced environment.

· Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

· Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and multitasking skills.

· Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing priorities and operational needs.

· Experience operating a point-of-sale (POS) system, cash register, and credit card processing equipment preferred.

· Ability to maintain accurate records and follow established cash-handling, health, safety, and sanitation procedures.

· ServSafe certification, or the ability to obtain certification within a specified period after hire, preferred.

· Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and reliable transportation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

· Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

· Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.

· Must be able to climb ladders and reach/bend/twist.

· The job may require driving to other work sites.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

· The work site is fast paced; not sedentary. It is an active role.

· The noise level is moderate due to regular foot traffic to the Café.
