The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting activities within the construction company. This includes managing the accounting team, ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting strategic financial planning. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting, job costing, and financial management. The financial Team consists of payroll clerks and accounts payable clerks.

Essential Job Functions

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices for internal and external review.
  • Work with President and CEO to develop and prepare monthly job cost reports reporting to ensure accurate project profitability tracking.
  • Prepare a rolling four-week cash flow projection to be delivered to the procurement department for the purpose of managing vendor payments
  • Develop and maintain internal controls to mitigate risk and prevent fraud across job sites and corporate offices.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing training and performance evaluations.
  • Implement and maintain accounting software systems (e.g., Sage 300, Viewpoint, Procore).
  • Lead the coordination of annual external financial audits, insurance audits (workers’ comp and general liability), and construction specific filings.
  • All other duties as assigned

Preferred Talents

  • Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing and WIP.
  • Proficiency in SAGE accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with AIA billing and lien waivers.
  • Knowledge of subcontractor compliance and insurance tracking.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience at a certified public accounting firm
  • 3 years of accounting experience in the construction industry
  • Three years’ experience with SAGE construction software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
