Job Description

The Adult Detention Officer is responsible for the intake, supervision, safety, and care of detainees housed in the County Adult Detention Center. This position monitors inmate activities, maintains facility security, operates control systems, and performs duties related to the booking, housing, and release of inmates.
The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities. Additional duties may be assigned as required.
  • Completes all documentation related to the booking, classification, and release of inmates.
  • Enters and updates inmate information in the detention management system.
  • Photographs, fingerprints, searches, and processes individuals entering the facility.
  • Inventories, secures, and documents inmate personal property.
  • Processes inmate requests, visitation documentation, attorney access, and property release forms.
  • Ensures the safety, security, and well-being of inmates in assigned areas.
  • Distributes meals, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other authorized items.
  • Dispenses medications as directed; monitors blood sugar levels and administers insulin when a Nurse is not available.
  • Conducts scheduled welfare checks and performs suicide watch duties when required.
  • Supervises inmate movement and activities, including recreation, visitation, religious services, attorney meetings, and court transports.
  • Staffs the Control Room and operates security systems, cameras, intercoms, and electronic door controls.
  • Monitors inmate movement throughout the facility and maintains constant communication with staff.
  • Responds to emergencies, disturbances, medical issues, and security incidents in accordance with policy.
  • Utilizes approved defensive tactics and detention equipment when necessary to maintain order and safety.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate logs, reports, and records related to daily operations.
  • Documents incidents, inmate behavior, and any unusual occurrences.
  • Performs other related duties as apparent and/or assigned.

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • One (1) year of detention, corrections, law enforcement, military, or related experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Texas Jailer’s License (required or obtained within state-mandated timeframe).
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Knowledge of
  • Adult detention center operations and inmate management practices.
  • Federal, state, and local regulations governing detention facilities.
  • Booking, classification, and release procedures.
  • Security systems, detention equipment, and defensive tactics.
  • Documentation, reporting, and recordkeeping requirements.
Skill in
  • Performing a wide range of detention officer duties in a secure environment.
  • Maintaining safety, security, and control of inmates.
  • Monitoring and supervising inmate activities and movement.
  • Communicating effectively and professionally with inmates, staff, and the public.
  • Remaining calm and decisive in stressful or volatile situations.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.


Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Work is performed in a secure detention environment with exposure to infectious diseases, physical confrontations, and potentially volatile individuals.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing stairs, and restraining combative inmates.
  • Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Other
  • Must successfully complete background checks, post-offer drug screen, physical condition evaluation and/or other testing in accordance with Harrison County policy and/or as authorized by law.
