Role Origin:
This position was created by growth and internal promotion — not turnover. The individual previously in this role has been promoted into a full-time sales capacity. We are building out our project leadership to match the volume and complexity of work we are taking on.
Job Summary:
The Field Supervisor / Project Manager owns commercial HVAC projects from scope development through final commissioning. This is a field-first role — roughly 70% in the field and 30% project management. Most days are spent leading the crew on the jobsite: direct supervision, hands-on assistance, quality control, and customer coordination during execution. The remainder is pre-project planning, job costing, equipment procurement, and scope review.
This is not a clipboard role - we don't do new building construction. We need someone who has done the retrofit work, understands the systems deeply, and can run a crew through complex chiller replacements, hydronic retrofits, and mechanical upgrades in occupied commercial buildings. The right person has spent a career in the trade, carries the technical credibility to earn a crew's respect on day one, and has the organizational instincts to keep multiple jobs moving without losing track of any of them.
A core part of this role is developing the people around you. PTM's Project Technician team is strong and growing — this person will be expected to mentor, coach, and draw on their own experience to share knowledge with the next generation of project techs.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Pre-Project Planning
- Scope review – read and interpret project documents, specifications, and drawings
- Job cost management – labor hours, material takeoffs, subcontractor coordination
- Equipment procurement and lead-time management
- Site surveys and pre-installation planning for complex retrofits
- Coordination with engineers, customers, and vendors prior to mobilization
- Phasing and access planning for occupied-building installations
- Field Execution & Supervision
- Supervise Project Technicians and subcontractors across active jobs
- Provide hands-on technical assistance – piping, rigging, refrigerant work, commissioning
- Manage daily field operations – manpower, materials, schedule, access
- Quality control throughout installation – piping, electrical connections, startup
- Customer and building staff communication during active work
- Problem-solving field conditions that deviate from plan
- Commissioning oversight and startup documentation
- Job close-out – punch lists, as-builts, warranty documentation
- Team Development
- Mentor and coach Project Technicians in the field
- Set and reinforce quality standards across the project team
- Identify skill gaps and growth opportunities in the team
- Document and communicate best practices from project to project
Technical Scope - What you Must be Able to Demonstrate Proficiency in
- Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers – replacement, piping, commissioning, controls integration. This is the core of the role.
- Hydronic piping mastery – chilled water, hot water, condenser water; NPT, weld pipe, press fittings; system design logic and installation sequencing
- Cooling towers – installation, rigging, piping, basin chemistry coordination
- Air handling units, fan coils, and terminal equipment associated with chilled/hot water systems
- Refrigeration circuits – operating principles, refrigerant handling, pressure testing
- Basic controls and BAS integration – enough to commission equipment and coordinate with controls technicians
- Boiler work is a part of the scope but not the primary focus of this role
Required Skills and Abilities:
- 10+ years of commercial HVAC field experience, with a significant portion on project and installation work — not primarily service
- Deep, demonstrated knowledge of chiller systems – both air-cooled and water-cooled – including installation, piping, commissioning, and troubleshooting
- Mastery of commercial hydronic piping: layout, sequencing, materials, weld and press methods, system logic
- Proven ability to supervise crews and coordinate multi-trade job sites
- Experience planning projects before mobilization – scoping, takeoffs, procurement, access planning
- Comfort in occupied commercial buildings: office towers, hospitals, schools, industrial facilities — managing work around building operations and tenant schedules
- Strong organizational skills – ability to manage multiple active jobs simultaneously without dropping the ball on any of them
- Experience mentoring or training less experienced technicians; the ability and desire to develop others
- Professional demeanor – you will be the primary PTM contact on job sites and in customer conversations during active projects
- Journeyman's or Master's license strongly preferred. Candidates relocating from out-of-state whose license is not automatically reciprocal will be evaluated individually – we will work with the right person to get licensed in Oklahoma
- Background in the plumbing and pipefitting trade is directly applicable and welcomed – the piping and hydronic systems knowledge transfers directly
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
- Experience with variable frequency drives, building automation systems, or controls integration
- OSHA 30 certification or demonstrated safety leadership on job sites
- Familiarity with job costing, change orders, and basic project financial management
- Experience working within a service company structure – understanding the difference between project scope and service scope, and the handoff between them
Education & Trade Background:
- Formalized apprenticeship program or technical trade school preferred (HVAC, plumbing, pipefitting, or related mechanical trades)
- Equivalent field experience and demonstrated mastery will be considered in place of formal credentials
- Journeyman's License or equivalent strongly preferred; see licensing note above for relocation candidates
